I remember outside of Sponne school all the kids would throw their pennies and 2p on the floor outside of the corner shop.!! One of the mums that didnt have much money used to send her little one to collect them all up when the kids had gone home!!
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.
  • When i was in 6th form our school was also a high school so we use to catch the bus with the younger ones. Everyday there was a pile of 1ps and 2ps on the floor just because 'they didnt like them' They'd just throw them everywhere?!

My friend whos the same age as me cant stand 1ps, 2ps 5ps or 10ps!!
I havent a clue why!! so when we go to the pub he emties his wallet and gets rid of em, so i nick two 10ps and a 1p, and its paid for my drink! Ribenas only 21p a half at our pub!! Think of how many drinks he could have brought me over the years!!

My auntie use to stand and wait at the bus stop and collect them, then when she got home she put them in a saving jar. She died in February so we counted through it as everything was left to us, she'd saved £200 odd in these little yogert pot tubs, just from kids throwing change away!

I can remember feeling like that with 1 & 2 cents. Ages ago, the govt stopped making them. Our lowest denominator is 5 cents. At the shops the price is either rounded up or down. Best thing they ever did. Saves all the loose change saga.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

Remember that any money left in a jar or piggy bank is constantly devaluing, especially in these times of high inflation...

I'm trying to teach my DD (15) the mse ways and she is quite good really. She is starting to know the price of things and doesn't buy just because she has the cash.

    However....

She can still be a bit careless with her money like forgetting money in pockets, dropping it, etc and she doesn't like 1p and 2 p coins it seems as they are found either on the floor in her bedroom  or piled up on the coffee table.

So when I found a £10 in the pocket of her jeans this morning before I put them in the wash (it could happen to anyone), I decided to put it in a jar with all the discarded pennies I gathered last week end and present it to her around Christmas to show her how much money she is wasting with her careless ways.

But I am wondering, is my teen the only one who doesn't like pennies? Or is it a generation thing?
I once found £50 in the back pocket of a pair of jeans I hadn't worn for months when I was a teenager.

No real point to this post, just to let you know that a lot of teenagers are the same.

I'm very good with money now. Think it helped that I had a job at 14 and any "luxuries" I wanted (clothes other than school uniform, books, nights out) I paid for out of my wages. :)

My DS3 and DS4 left home recently ( for the last time:T ) within the space of 2 weeks. What do I miss most, apart from the dirty laundry? DS3 would cover his bedroom carpet with change from his pocket. Everything under £1 went into the overseas missions box. They're really missing my son:rotfl: The rest I collected and counted for him, just before he left I presented him with £70 in crisp notes. He was thrilled:D

Mademoiselle, deary me. Perhaps if you cared so much you should fly out and hand these people money yourself!

Oh and i think the debt crisis might be due to your generation, not the generation of teens we have now!

Vixarooni, that is such a hardfaced and immature comment to a really relevant Post.

The point Mademoiselle is making is...... if people don't want coppers in their purses/pockets then that is their decision. What she is suggesting is if they have suplus coins then at least donate them to a worthy cause rather than throw them away.

As most MSE'ers will tell you ......every little helps

I agree that teenagers should be encouraged to put the money in collection boxes. But hey, teenagers are teenagers. I have an empty 2 litre pop bottle in the kitchen which is a quarter full of coppers and 5p's. I am not sure how much is in there, probably a couple of quid, but when it gets full I am going to count it and change it into cash for christmas.
