Teens and Coppers

I'm trying to teach my DD (15) the mse ways and she is quite good really. She is starting to know the price of things and doesn't buy just because she has the cash.

However....

She can still be a bit careless with her money like forgetting money in pockets, dropping it, etc and she doesn't like 1p and 2 p coins it seems as they are found either on the floor in her bedroom  or piled up on the coffee table.

So when I found a £10 in the pocket of her jeans this morning before I put them in the wash (it could happen to anyone), I decided to put it in a jar with all the discarded pennies I gathered last week end and present it to her around Christmas to show her how much money she is wasting with her careless ways.

But I am wondering, is my teen the only one who doesn't like pennies? Or is it a generation thing?

My kids are the same and both have jars of small change, but it's certainly not specific to their generation. When I first met my DH (32 years ago) he had a huge tin full of small change in his room that amounted to over £100. I had the job of counting it, but it was horrible because the coins were all fluffy and smelly.
  • Most teens near me (not the most desirable place to live lol) throw 5p's 2p's and 1p's on the floor on their way to / from school. I seriously find about 30p a day! My kids age 6 and 3 think it's fab we find so much money :) Also, if we are in the queue in the shop and a teen is in front buying something for eg it costs 90p, they pay with a £1 and say keep the change! whats all that about???

I never did that, and hope my kids never do that either.

When I first met my OH, he used to throw coppers in the bin    I've never known anyone else do that, and I couldn't believe it. He was 20/21 at the time.

I have now converted him to having a big jar that he puts all his change in and he's quite keen on this idea; I get an ear bending for not putting in as much as he does!

Oh no i was the same. When i first started to deal with my own money 1p's and 2p's were nothing to me. I wouldnt want them in my piggy bank so i used to throw them in the bin aswell.

When youre that age, you dont understand how the pennys look after the pounds. Money is money and you have it and its gone, you cant really look at a 1p and think, if i save a 100 i will get a pound. I know my brain didnt work like that a couple of years ago!

Although saying that, im now 21 and i refuse to keep 1p's and 2p's in my money jar, its only silver and gold i want haha. Although i guess im still in the time of my life where i dont have any outgoings, but i am more careful than i was.

My son who is 5 is starting to ask if he can help with things to earn pennies, i let him... he earns £1 for helping me unload the dishwasher etc ... so I asked him to take £1 out of my purse to put in his money box and he came in with 10p and said could he have the 10p cause it is more than pennies but its prettier than a £1

there's a flower bed outside the off license that we walk past on the school and playgroup runs. I go past it at least 16 times a week and there is nearly always change there in the morning. My girls love picking up the 1ps and 2ps, occasionally 10p and 20ps. They all go into a tin at home :) I found £5 on the floor there one morning last week :o

I don't like 2p's and 1p's cluttering my purse. I tend to clear them out and stick in the kids piggy banks. This become their spending money when we go away.

I'm a total change hoarder, I have a little digital coin jar so we can see it adding up. Even as a teen I would save coins, bag them and put them in the bank.

Mind you, I never had much money when I was young, so every penny counted.

OP - the idea of putting all the money in a jar is a good one. I am currently always on at my eldest (8) for leaving money in his pockets. One time I found £20 that my brother had given him.....just stuffed into the back pocket

In my house if anyone leaves money lying around it becomes mine - soon makes them look after it.
I honestly can't believe that anyone would thrown money in the bin even if it is only pennies!
