Phew PP thank goodness is was the delicious Huw and not Hugh (I did wonder about the spelling!) so you're alright there although his voice is exquisite isnt it...
Re the "ice cream" I did some this am with a large carton of plain yog, two whizzed mangos and 2 tsp honey. All whizzed and then churned cos I have a machine & its easy rather than needing to! I would be inclined to experement TBH...make it and try stirring every couple of hours & you prob get a better/even mix & less ice if nowt else?

Anyone recommend a good peppermint cordial recipe? We keep some commercial in for medicinal purposes...very good for trapped wind &/or ikkey tum, but there's no hurry cuz I'm having trouble tracking down spearmint & peppermint plants in particular. I'd also like to get some pineapple mint too; a mate had some a few years back & it's deelish on fresh fruit salad:drool:

I don't have a peppermint cordial recipe but a good cure for any sort of nausea is ginger tea - grate a little fresh ginger into a mug, pour on boiling water and sip when cool enough. A bashed slice of ginger works equally well if you don't want to clean a grater! I originally saw this suggested for morning sickness, but it works for upset tum, travel sickness etc.

I have begun the experiment da da derr (menacingly)

This is what i have done but not frozen/ churned enough for 2nd mixing yet

1 x 500g pack tropical fruit smoothie mix(39p from Farmfoods)
    1 x 500g tub natural yoghurt(48p at Asda)
    1 x 300ml tub whipping cream(88p @ Asda )
    4 x tablespoons icing sugar???
    4 x tablespoons lemon juice???

Defrost fruits i guess summer fruits would work ,purree in a blender with the yoghurt ,sugar and lemon juice when smooth put aside and whip the cream till stiff stir the puree yoghurt mix thoroughly ..............freeze for a couple hours then mix with leccy mixer until smooth repeat a couple times over next 24 hours

will let you know about taste and quantity tomorrow but must be about 1.5l

I have seen manual ice cream makers - a plastic ball with two layers. put crushed ice in the outer layer of the ball to chill things and put the ingredients in the central part of the ball. The idea is just to shake the ball and ice cream is magically made. I haven't tried this myself of course, just read about it!

cooking dahl at the moment - I thought i was making lentil pate till I re-read my scrawled notes and realised it was dahl. as long as DH has something to snack on it doesn't matter. am I spelling dahl right? or am I thinking of the author?

Hi guys.......today's free food comes courtesy of caterers who over-ordered bread rolls for a bbq......we have brought home 2 black bin bags full of them, to put in the freezer.......that will keep us going for packed lunches for a couple of weeks :D

I still have loads of the roastable veggies left that my friend gave me (thinking of the colourful 5 a day thing) so bought some cheap mozerella cheese to make some sort of Mediterranean bake for a dinner this week.

I did try and get some of the 50p stuff from Morrisons but the hoards had beaten me to it - I did notice, however, that so much of their BOGOFs work out just as cheap so bought some bits for the freezer that will come in handy for dinners over the coming weeks. Also got some reduced price fresh (ish) coriander which will make some delish carrot and coriander soup that I can take in a flask to work for lunch

I can't get down to the 50p a day thing, but I am not far off 50p for the main meal........and that is a start.

I'm with you on this one, but if I can average 50p a person for the main meal I'll be happy for now..... If I can get there and hold it steady for a few months (without everyone picking more during the day), then I can start working on reducing the daily total down.

In June my average was just over 76p, so I've still a way to go on that one..... but I'm getting there :) And considering my parents reckon it's not possible to do a main meal for even as low as £1 per person (they didn't believe it about 15 years ago when I first calculated my average to that if I worked at it, and now seem to reckon it should be at least double that figure!!) I reckon I'm doing really well.

Haven't yet worked out what we've the July average is so far, but had better make a start on it before I lose all my notes as to what we've had !!! I don't actually expect to drop this month though, as we've had a couple of 'expensive' meals due to elder son being home for 3 weeks (and we then won't see him again for over 4 months), and have another to come this Wednesday as it's younger son's birthday -- and as such he gets his choice of meal.....

  • Evening everyone, sorry not been posting as had nasty virus..not from food!

Well Weezl you will be glad to know i have been on challenge..only just though as there was minor revolt in household when they thought there was nothing in..I ask you what can you do with them? I look at pantry and calculate meals, not look at quick fix snack stuff, although i do usually have that covered..just not had energy to lurk over the cooker.

I made a lovely lamb stew, with pearl barley and veg plus some dumplings..just fancied them and i only had one!
    This boiled down to
500g of lamb ( prepacked from tesco xmas offer of frozen stew packs 2 for 3.75..it might have been less) £1.90
    onion -5p
    pearl barley- 30p
stock-1p bay leaves and herbs free from garden
leave in slow cooker 4 hours add, dumplings at the end
    dumplings-atora suet-2p, flour , 3p herbs free-(5p)

serve with fresh veg, carrots -30p, broccoli-30p-£3

But it lasted two days as so much, just added more stock the day after. so two meals worked out at !£1.50 per day, other stuff came in slightly over for breakfast and dinner.., so reckon each day i have spent roughly three pounds.

Tea tonight is free beef, potatoes and the works..reckon i can be under the amount.

On another note, sent OH out shopping thought i would be crafty and go last night, just for knocked down offers..Mr T's had bags of bread...chucking it away..wouldn't even let him have it! I thought it was disgusting at the amount families could save off of this!

  • Forgot to add, has anyone thought of hare? A la Hugh style... my butcher goes out shooting them, and if meat gets any more expensive, i have my eye on the woodpidgeon which always likes to take aim at my windows!
