I've just been looking at the price of lentils on the asda and tesco sites for delivery to my area. they don't have those big 5kg bags and the 2 kg bags work out no cheaper per 100g than the 500g.
but having said that - they're still a bargain compared to meat.
I showed DD this thread before she went to bed, she was very proud of her moment of fame. as I tucked her in she said "the 50p lady has nice recipes hasn't she?"...ahh!

cw18, don't know if you have tried it, but if you put a pinch of nutmeg in with spinach (fresh or otherwise - but especially fresh) it makes it really really really yummy!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. So do I. Tres sweet!! What a lovely thing to say & I'm sure our Weezl will be chuffed with being the 50p lady!
Fab that the recipe went down well! I'm with Shaz moaney money! I did look & you can slimming worldise the lentil pate - just replace fry light for olive oil & think its free on green so good n healthy! Would also look at indian supermarket for lentils etc but for me a huge bag is too much and dont have anywhere to store it. The granita looks yummy too!! The joy of an ice cream machine (I got mine free from survey vouchers!) is that you freeze the bowl and then chuck the stuff in and turn on and it just mixes for you so you can get on with other stuff. I do agree re buying gadgets though - the whole point is to save money & there we all are spending loads on widgets that we dont necc need - bread maker being classic example for me! Spent a reasonable amount & ended up flogging it as prefer texture of HM bread & like making it!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! I'm with you on this one, but if I can average 50p a person for the main meal I'll be happy for now.....
In June my average was just over 76p, so I've still a way to go on that one.....
Haven't yet worked out what we've the July average is so far, but had better make a start on it before I lose all my notes as to what we've had !!!
I don't actually expect to drop this month though, as we've had a couple of 'expensive' meals due to elder son being home for 3 weeks (and we then won't see him again for over 4 months), and have another to come this Wednesday as it's younger son's birthday -- and as such he gets his choice of meal.....
Just totted up July so far, and despite having a few rather 'hefty' meals (2 over £1/head, and 1 not much under) my average is a fantastic 69.5p per person per main meal -- so I'm currently running at an 8.5% reduction on last month :j
Just need to keep it up nowCheryl0 -
Fired by my family's enthusiasm for the dahl, I'm going to try some more recipes this coming week. I'm going to try the no knead bread, the gnocchi and zarazara's stuffing bake. and maybe...maybe... pigs trotters! I'm more scared of the butcher than the trotters!weaving through the chaos...0

Well done CW...I think Weezl started lowering until she got more innovative but sure she'll clue you up on this...her frugalista nature didnt just arrive - shes worked really hard at it! Still think she's be fab on telly though! Anyone know anyone in the BBC or owt or maybe she should be on Martins prog? I appreciate that some people may its unatainable but even if we dont spend as little as she does I am sure that we have all been more adventurous, innovative & spent less overall which cant be bad can it eh! Would be interested to know how the gnocchi go...I have to cook a meal for my meal swap & may do them then as most of ingredients are free on green and it does sound nice & filling!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1!
