I never thought I would say this but...I HATE SNAILS.
I fished 12 of them of my lettuce (only in small pots, hardly a bumper crop)
Obviously the rain has washed away my eco friendly slug repellant (sigh) :(

Can't believe how motherly I am being about my plants. I think my windowsill herbs all have different personalities too and am treating them accordingly- Coriander is a bit of a drama queen and needs careful handling, oregano is an unkempt hippy type that is spewing forth from the pot, basil is a big, bumbling 'jolly hockey sticks' kinda gal that is very thirsty but otherwise can put up with anything. rosemary is rich and delicious but a little kinky...

Oh dear, it's late, I'm gonna regret talking nonsense tomorrow... ;)

    LOL! :rotfl:

Believe me, since we took on our [STRIKE]wilderness[/STRIKE], sorry allotment, it's got very personal between me and the slugs!

We're right by the entrance and I'm afraid anyone walking past can just hear a voice from behind the bean canes saying "OH no you don't! Oh, and don't think hiding there will do you any good at all. And you...I've seen you"
You get the general idea. :o

Some of them are HUGE. I collect them all up in a pot and bring them home to feed the chickens. The snails tend to stay in the nettles at the side (First meal from allotment- nettle soup and nettle gnocchi  ), so they've been let off at the moment, but should they stray near my courgettes...

One of the things I love about this thread is the fact that people appear to be likeminded...ie a bit off the wall! Been laughing way way through breakfast at the last two posts (HMK & Sian the green in case someone else posted in between lol!) as also have a tendency to chat to plants, loathe slugs and would love to discover a way of eraicating them! WHile I understand a purpose for most creatures just dont understand why God invented slugs!
eselt that lan index sounds great. I had a chat with a vegan once who also grew everything but to me it seemed like an awful lot of effort and, for my pallett, not enough yum! Each to their own eh! I would love to have a quirky eco house though...not too remote as I'd get scared but far enough that it was romantic. I bloke dd one on grand designs in the woods and it was beautiful, round & packed with straw for insulation...!!

(Also doesn't include £30/month on dog food that comes from elsewhere, but that can't be reduced without getting rid of a dog  )

is your dog on a special diet or anything ? if not have you ever tried him/her on complete dry food ? We use it for our dog, he's thriving and eats it very happily indeed. The one we use is Dr Johns Gold it's only £8.99 for a 15kg sack seems to last for ages. It's cheaper than other dry foods because it's classed as a working dog food apparently. If you have a farm & garden store nearby check them out, some places have sacks open so you can buy a little bag to see if your dog will eat it first. It would be a big saving each month

The dalmatian has to be low protein (they're terribly prone to kidney stones otherwise) and he also has a lot of food allergies - so we have to avoid anything with 'E' numbers in it for him. He was on James Wellbeloved (cheapest we could get that at was £2.49/kg at our local pet shop, and he has 500g/day!), but Pets At Home now have the same stuff under their own name (Wainwrights) which is normally £28.99 for 15kg (so one sack lasts a month), but regularly on offer at around £25.99.

The Yorkie has a much cheaper dried food, which cost me about £15 for £15kg (with one sack lasting around 3 months) as best I recall -- it's another PAH own brand, but I can't actually find it on their website!

ETA: Just 'googled' the St Johns food you mentioned, and the Silver Medal is down to 18% protein which suits -- but unfortunately it carries the message "With EEC permitted antioxidants." without saying what they are. The one we get actually states it's "hypo-allergenic" which the vet says is what we need to look for.

don't worry -- I'm always open to suggestions for alternatives :)

it was a pure fluke I found the PAH equivalent -- they had an offer (3 for 2) on the James Wellbeloved which made it cheaper than the local pet shop, so I'd gone in for that...... but they had their own brand in a prominent 'end of aisle' location, and it was cheaper than the JW on offer !!!!

I'm amazed! Does the 50p include washing products etc. or is it just food?
