I think that, for a long time, the media confused "healthy eating" with "low fat" and didn't look at the implications very deeply. Think of all those low-fat products which are still touted as "healthy" despite being stuffed with added sugars, chemical sweeteners, salts, flavourings or starches/fillers to compensate for the reduction in taste caused by removing the fat. Why a fat-free yoghurt needs modified maize starch, gelatine, colouring, acidity regulators (sodium citrates), citric acid, flavourings, stabilisers (pectins) and sweetener (Aspartame), I'll never fathom. Far better, surely, to have a smaller amount of proper yoghurt with proper fruit in it?
    :)

You sound like me! My children are used to my little rants in the supermarket :rotfl: I discovered the other day that several brands of tinned peas contained tartrazine  I knew some/most tinned mushy peas did, but garden peas?? For heavens sake...

And I nearly picked up Weight Watcher oven chips today (special offer and they're handy for Fridays if I don't have anything ready and DH has to do tea  ) because they were potatoes and sunflower oil and low fat. Until I checked the ingredients and they're also coated in some kind of batter. Why??!!

I don't know why we can't have food flavoured food...

    HMK

PS It was worse in the States though. I've only been once, when the eldest 2 were 2 yrs and 8 months (family trip paid for by my M + D ) and it was lovely, but when I tried to buy yogurt I could choose 'cotton candy' or 'root beer' or 'buuble gum flavours'. No plain, no fruit flavours (without all the other gunk) and there were no non-sugar coated breakfast cereals. No wonder the US frugal/cooking sites slate cold cereal so much. I couldn't find any equvilent to Weetabix, or Shreddies, or anything like that.

    Sorry, I'll stop now. :o

    re allinsons dried yeast

I do use it in the breadmaker but do the frothy thing with some of the water from the recipe and the sugar too first then add this to the machine and start it straightaway...........don't use the timer!!!

The allinsom stuff is fresh yeast which has been dried, the doves farm one and the sachets are special easy blend yeast

I buy tesco brand(50p last time i bought any) which is 8 sachets i can do 2 small loaves per sachet so its not too expensive really

I have also been experimenting with using a piece of old dough as a starter for new loaf ......it works but takes a lot longer the way i did it

thanks Shaz - so it sounds like I can still use what I have, as I've never yet used the timer on mine (don't fancy leaving it on overnight with a dog around who loves the smell, but who also gets upset by noises -- including the 'squeal' part way through to tell me it's time to add any 'extras' -- to the point he'd probably wake everyone ;) )

    Hello all you lovelies!

Been indexing away like mad and think/hope I've included everyone (you have to be very systematic and have about 10 windows open all at the same time! Tricky!) If you go to post number one of this thread, there is now an idex, which includes all the recipes from the last challenge and this new one.

BOB- that flat cake sounds nomnomnom, good idea! will you post a pic of results? thanks for the garden tips too...;)

yategirl, thanks I'll check that link too! All those things were just on my walk from the station to work! I've been amazed by what I've started spotting! It's as if some primal hunter-gatherer instinct has been awakened. The countryside used to be just a big blob of green to me, but now it's becoming lots of distinctly different things, and a bit like a larder! Chicken manure eh? May well take you up on that....

redsquirrel, that recipe looks great! What about sunflowerseeds in lieu of the pine nuts?

CW18, glad DH approves of the pate :D

Vampiric addiction, how's the saag, have you tasted it yet?

hi and welcome munchki:jwe definately hope you'll post some recipes:D

plum pie - oooh tapas! nomnomnomnomnom... Will definately buy some more broad beans now!;)

    Love Weezl x

All eaten i am afraid...yep the stampede occurred plus added teenagers dipping in whilst i was out:eek: There are three slices left:o so next time i make one will post a piccie..i have to say, i did have a small slice and is very sweet and i always reduce the sugar, and i only used Asda cheapo range of mixed fruit....a pretty good tip to add more fruit and reduce sugar. Found the info about tuna interesting, not always reccomended on SW diet, but then again i am also with Nat yoghurt brigade as well, can't stick the mullers ...so will be having a go at making my own.

Tea this evening was a veg chilli.
    1 courgette-25p (can't wait for my own!!)
    1/2 an onion- 3p
    sweetcorn from yesterday-0p
    tin of kidney beans-19p
    tin of plum toms- 15p
    stock, garlic and herbs-0.5p
    spaghetti-20p
    83.5p

    Pud is melon-34p

Dinner, was poached egg on toast.mmmmm 24p ( me and DD2)
Teenagers snacks-20p (pigs:o )DS1 bought own dinner from shop-don't know what!
Forgot to add teabags and stuff-4p ish
Milk 0p today as not used.
fruit & porridge for breakfast, 10p (last of market bananas)

SO far--about £1.75 ish, i say the 'ish' as i reckon they will be back later looking for more and i maybe using milk later so will add to totals if i do.

Will have to stock up on some more fruit and milk later but it is certainly working out cheaper for me planning this way.:T
Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:

Sorry if this is a tangent but does anyone else have lettuce with teeny tiny barbs on the leaves? I was a little nervous that perhaps I have spawned Audrey III and I should be panicking...
