I managed it! The link to my blog should be on my homepage now. :) Thanks, Ceridwen. :)

I must get some more OS stuff done tonight. I'm going to make my sister in law's birthday cake at her house tomorrow, so that'll save me some on the gas bill! :D Mind you, the sugar and spice rings are best eaten when just cooling ever so slightly from the oven. :)

    Ooooh!!!! Sugar and spice rings????
Will you give me the recipie? Sounds lovely. (I'm a newbie)
    Thanks very much :D
I have saved your blog to "fave's" so I can see what yu are getting up to!!

Helloooooooooooooooooo all the lovely regulars, a kiss for you, and a big hello to the newbies! :A:T

I'm so glad this thread hasn't died while I'm being so busy and neglecting it!:o

I'm still alive, and I promise I'm still keepin' the faith on the ole challenge! Sorry I've not been around much, our month while the lodger is away feels like such a rare window of opportunity to sort out all our long-awaited jobs, so we're really seizing the day. (10-12 hrs solid sanding on some grim days- ouch!)

Lol ceridwen and ISOM, no we have not fallen off any ladders, although I fell down the stairs last week and seem to have stunned my cocxyx (how on earth do you spell that!)

One of the advantages of having been a frugalista, stockpiler, freezer-filler, batch- cooker etc.... for a while is that I don't have to cook while all this is going on! We just decide from our freezer-audit spreadsheet what we fancy and nuke it in the microwave. Brilliant!

I'm taking advantage of a weird spot of insomnia to write to you all. During the day if I get itchy fingers for a bit of MSE, then poor Mr Weezl feels left alone with all the hard work.

Speaking of Mr W. and all the hard work, despite endless cake and biscuits whilst doing all this DIY, ISOM felt he was looking a little 'reduced' in size when he was sighted at his birthday cinema trip on weds.

Hmmmmmmn.... What's a girl to do? He's having 6 puddings/sweet snacks a day at the mo! I think they're all pretty calorific: full fat ice cream, jammy sponge, choc chip cookies. I'll have to trawl the recipe index again! I've got some coconut in, so maybe I could make shaz's cake!

Avocet, cw18, or anyone else who knows how to work out calories per serving without frying your brain, can I plead a favour, and beseech you to work out how many cals per serving in that there cake?;):D I'd be awfully grateful! My geeky powers have all been consumed by the task of managing the 'house do-up' project fund at the moment!

I'll keep popping back. I miss you all, and wish you loads of continued success with all your challenges. :T:T:T:T:T:T

    Lots of love,

    Weezl x

P.S forgot to say that it seems that Aldi's special offers this week are all about fishing, so anyone who's DH might like to escape for the day, and who loves the idea of free food, maybe here's a potential investment opportunity! Looks like you could get all the gear for £20.....

I wonder if acetate monkey would like a new hobby.....

Lovely to "see" you Weezl -- even if it's only a fleeting visit amidst all your decorating !!

Had a play on the recipecal site you pointed me to earlier, and had an attempt at working out Shaz's coconut cake (I assume this is the one you wanted?)

Came a bit unstuck on the coconut...... gave me a choice of sweetened or unsweetened, and I'm not sure what ours is (with none in the house to try and figure out from the pack!!). So I've gone for the unsweetened version, on the basis it'll probably be the lower calorie count -- meaning it'll be the minimum you're giving AM (if that makes sense  )

I've also had to make assumptions about the flour (used white all purpose, self rising, enriched) and milk (1% fat)

Nuts, coconut meat, dried (desiccated), not sweetened grams (g) 75.0
    Wheat flour, white, all-purpose, self-rising, enriched grams (g) 250.0
    Sugars, granulated grams (g) 200.0
Milk, lowfat, fluid, 1% milkfat, with added vitamin A fl oz 8.0

    figures for whole cake...

    Energy 2256.48 Cal
    Protein 38.108 g
    Fats 53.189 g
    ......Polyunsaturates 1.64 g
    ..... Monosaturates 2.95 g
    ..... Saturates 44.843 g
    Cholesterol 12.20 mg
    Carbohydrates 415.423 g

so if you get 10 slices it's 225 cals a piece, or 8 'fat' slices it's 282 cals a piece

hi guys, have not been about too much these last couple of weeks as I have been on a major decluttering mission - and still some way to go sadly, but we are getting there!

but I am still very much in control of the food budget, and things are going well. A friend has successfully grown butternut squash this year so I have some of those with some home grown peppers and onions to roast - I find that butternut squash, when frozen after cooking, goes very mushy, but in turn that makes it into a fab pasta "sauce" mix. It is one of my current freezer faves!

I don't have an aldi or lidl near me, so have been shopping online with Tesco, which is good because I can see what I am spending before I press "submit" and the offer codes on MSE at the mo are excellent. But last weekend I had a mystery shop to do next door to Lidl, so decided to shop there instead. I was very disappointed - I spent my full £50 food budget but came away with less than my Tesco shop! And I still had to get extra stuff during the week from the corner shop......

So, I will have to stick with Tesco, but at least I have tried!

I need to have a read through of the last few days thread for some more ideas - thanks for the inspiration so far!!

Hi Weezl - I see that cw18 has beaten me to the calorie counter :)

Thought I would suggest a breakfast spread or sandwich filler for the progressively-skinnier Acetate Monkey. A sandwich made with this would make a good afternoon snack or late-evening supper if you are trying to cram extra calories into the poor boy. :) High in calories but high in nutritional value as well... and my children love it. The recipe originally came from "The Penniless Vegetarian", by David Scott (but I can't remember what he called it).

    Sweet peanut sesame butter

    Ingredients:
    25 g sesame seeds (7.5p from 100g bag of Sainsbury's Sesame Seeds at £0.29)
100 g peanut butter (21.6p from 454g pot of Sainsbury's Crunchy Peanut Butter at £0.98)
1 tablespoon honey (7.9p using 25g from 454g pot of Sainsbury's Pure Clear Blended Honey at £1.43)
    0.25 tsp salt (0p)

    Method:
    1. Toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan until golden brown.
    2. Mix all the ingredients together.

    Serves 8
Calories per serving: 99 (but two servings, which my children easily achieve, is 198 calories so it soon adds up, especially when you factor in the calories for the bread)
Cost per batch: £0.37 (or about 4.6p per serving)

Note -- If you use Sainsbury's Basics versions of the peanut butter and honey (which I haven't tried, so I don't know if they are edible), the cost drops to £0.28 per batch (or about 3.5p per serving)

Further Note -- It has just occurred to me that Mr Weezl might not want any more sweet things if he is already eating extra puddingy stuff every day. It might be possible to change this recipe to a savoury version. Hmmm.... Off to investigate...

Back again with update on a savoury version of the Sweet Peanut Sesame Butter recipeposted earlier... it seems to work! And it tastes good on celery sticks (not that celery will contribute much to fattening up Mr Weezl).

However, it is more expensive than the sweet version, because there are more ingredients and the spring onions at 18p didn't help on the budget front (but the ingredients could be varied according to what is to hand, in the garden, cheap etc.; regular onion would have been a lot cheaper). Here's what I did...

    Savoury peanut sesame butter
    Ingredients:
    25 g sesame seeds (7.5p)
    100 g peanut butter (21.6p)
    1 tablespoon soy sauce (6.8p)
    1 tsp lime juice (0.9p)
    sprinkle of chilli flakes (negligible)
2 spring onions, chopped (18p estimated - next time, would use regular onion @ estimated 3p)
    grated root ginger (3p estimated)

    Method:
    1. Toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan until golden brown.
    2. Remove the sesame seeds from the pan and add the soy sauce, lime juice, chilli, spring onions and ginger. Sizzle until the liquid has almost disappeared.
    3. Mix all the ingredients together.
    4. Taste, and add salt and pepper (or more lime juice, soy sauce etc.) if required.

    Cost per batch:
£0.58 (or about 7.2p per serving)

Hi all, back from holiday, not had a chance to see how many pages I've got to catch up on yet!! Food-wise, everything while I was away came out of holiday spending budget, although I did have a very MSE visit to Tesco in Poland for a few bits and pieces! Could have brought back loads of food from various places but due to lack of space in luggage I ended up with just some chillis from Italy, some Polish vodka and some packet soups - absolutely loved the soup there... actually I've eaten so much lovely food! Strangely though, it's nice to be back to cooking for myself again - never thought I'd get bored of eating out!!

Did a quick shop when I got back, totals have been added to my sig. Had to feed and water (read 'fill with beer') friend on Thursday and OH last night and decided to add that in to the challenge as it doesn't happen very often. So bit of a jump up on the alcohol budget :o but there is still a fair bit left in the fridge ;)

Money is very tight for the rest of the month (get paid in a fortnight), so will be trying to buy as little as possible till then. Checked up on the garden yesterday and got a decent amount of potatoes and a few reasonable sized onions which will help.

Hope everyone's had a good couple of weeks! x
