The other thing that I find very compelling about your argument want2bemortgage3 is that interestingly the reason for the increase in rice prices recently has been (in part) to do with a shift in the chinese diet away from vegetarianism, and liking now to eat more meat than a decade ago.
The result of this has been that paddy fields have become grazing land for cattle in parts. Since one animal requires the land that you could provide grain for 1000 people, per 1 person fed in the equivalent meat-land, this is having an effect here (as well as everywhere else) on the price of our staple goods.
It's definately been food for thought for me. Thank you for saying your thoughts.:T

Yep...land use is one of the common reasons (and certainly one of my reasons personally) for being vegetarian. One does apparently get a lot more food per acre for people if its a vegetarian diet they are eating.
Right - just off to report the spam on my thread......0 -
Well....peeps might be interested in the 2 best veggie websites I have found - if only from t'point of view that another common reason for being vegetarian is its just plain cheaper:

oh me goodness go off to have some recreational qulting and misses all the exitement! Each to their own I say ... if you dont wanna eat meat then dont, thats fine - can see both points as have been veggie but missed bacon too much so have made a compromise and now have happy/organic meat whch means I have less meat but when I do I knows its had a good and happy life as far as possible. As you all know the piggy brain was too much for me but having seen our Weezl going a lighter shade of pale can vouch that her ability to "try owt once" is higher than mine!
Hope youre having lovely time at bring a dish wedding reception weezl...hugs re the decorating for both of you as can understand why you both may be feeling less than ...um friendly...Do I know the happy couple btw?!! pm btw! Hope they will be blissfully, and frugally happy! Been quite a day on here me thinks all in all and am with C on lots of happy stroking vibes! As for eating cats - not in this house - Poppy, Dotty, Manu & Alfie say nooooo way as they suck their tummies in trying to look slim enough not to eat! I never would cos I love em...hugs & happy vibes allNerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -
the idea of eating cats is a big "nono" in this house too -- as is dogs, mice, hamsters, gerbils or anything else considered in our society as being an animal never bred for the purpose of being a food item.
I also avoid rabbit, though I have had it a couple of times -- once as a very young child and not told about it until years later, and once as a teenager when I was almost violently sick on being told what I'd almost polished off (was on an exchange trip to Germany, and just thought my hosts had cooked chicken in a way I wasn't used to).
Duck is another I don't buy, even in clearance -- but that's more down to the fact that the only time I've tried it (from my Grandad's plate in a restaurant) it was far too greasy for my palate.
Hubby eats venison and ostrich which are two I've no strong feelings about, but couldn't bring myself to try even when we could afford them.
The one I avoid like the plague for welfare reasons is veal. I know welfare standards have improved for this (the calves now have to have room to stand and lie down at will as best I understand), but I still think it caries the stigma of the old days. This caused me major problems on honeymoon in Italy, as I was informed by the waiter in a restaurant that any dish with minced 'beef' is almost certainly minced veal -- so no spag bol, lasagne or cannelloni for me over there
I don't like eating battery hens (or buying eggs from caged hens), but I've had to face up to the fact we have too much chicken in our diets to avoid it, and (when not at high risk of infection during chemo) hubby can get through more eggs than are considered healthy.
I don't like having red meat every day, the blokes will only tolerate so many fish dishes in a month, and won't settle for vegetarian which I could happily have at least a couple of times a week, so chicken is a compromise...... It's just our budget won't allow for it to all be free range, even though we all agree it tastes nicer. I just love the rare times when I find free range in clearance at about the same price as the "cheap" stuffI do try and buy the "better" eggs when we're having scrambled, omelettes, poached or boiled as I think they taste better too..... but it's the cheapie ones for cooking purposes, as the main things I use eggs in are 'treats' we couldn't work into the budget any other way

Hi all
Just a small question from me today
I have just got back from Cash and Carry with my mum (bless her !!) and much to her horror they were selling packs of ducks feet.
My mums first thought was pass the bucket !!! My first thought was for Weezl
So the question is what can you do with ducks feet ??? They were £1.80 a pack and there were 10 feet in each pack.

Eeek! Wouldn't have thought they'd have been good for muchCheryl0
