  • I dont see why anyone would want to eat a pigs head, in my eyes all animals are the same, so the pigs head is no different to my pet cats head!

Maybe I could understand if meat was essential for health, but it isn't, plus it's expensive compared to veggie foods!

But surely while people are still eating meat, it's better that the whole animal gets used rather than some just gets discarded (raising the price of what is used, and generating more waste to be disposed of!)

Tried adding plain rice to the savoury rice with tonights tea.... not sure how much others add, but I added 120g plain rice to a 120g packet (making the 240g of rice I'd normally cook for three of us with any 'rice' meal). Have to say that I noticed the difference -- more 'sticky', not as dark, and not anywhere near as intense a flavour. Waiting to see if hubby or our son say anything now...... Will probably carry on using 2 packs, but worth knowing this can be done if I'm ever strapped for cash at the end of the budget for the month :) Also probably worth remembering for when elder son is home on leave, as everyone complains at sharing two packs between 4 of us -- but if I add 80g plain rice to 2 packs it shouldn't dilute it as much while giving everyone a "full" portion ;)

ETA: our son has just this moment come in complaining the rice isn't "beef" -- or if it is it's either not the normal brand or I've cooked it differently. And his face tells me he's not impressed!! So I guess that money saving tip isn't going to be a big hit here :( Better stock up for fun while Lidl have them on offer then....................

Thanks for that! I suppose you're right, and a pig's leg is the same as you're cat's leg. When it finally goes to the cattery in the sky maybe you could pop him in the post for me!

It take it you're a vegetarian/vegan of strong feeling? That's fine, welcome!

Not all animals are the same, (though a lot of them taste like chicken), as we form emotional attachments to different ones (depending on the culture we come from). If we follow that line of thinking where would you like to stop? at amoebas/bacteria? Eating bacteria (which you do) is like eating your cat? Come now, let's be reasonable.

You're right that meat is more land expensive to produce that vegetables (I take it you meant that as the head itself cost nowt), and on that line I take it you never buy organic food due to the high land:yeild ratio that also has? Also, given meat's expensive cost you'll sell the cat (expensive meat eater that it is) and get a dog (which can survive quite happily on a veggie diet)?

And of course we don't need meat to survive, but we've evolved to be hunter/gatherer omnivores who don't just grind vegetables (hence the sharp teeth at the front) so I'm sure the odd bit every now and again won't harm.

Errr.....can I prescribe a days break from decorating perchance? Lie back, deep breaths, relax.....while Dr ceridwen sends out healing vibes.

Errrr....the odd glass of wine or two is allowed methinks - and maybe another takeaway meal as reward for the hard work put in......

Hugs....and love to both you and our weezl....<goes off looking for soothing smiley, cant find one....oh well>

It is difficult for us vegetarians to understand/accept that a lot of other people eat meat....and strong feelings can often come out all round. Me.....I just tend to keep quiet...but thats not everyone's way....

    So.....back to those healing vibes...

Cw18, and sammy_kaye, your stories really touched me, thanks so much for saying.

You are both very inspiring, with the way that you are able to pick yourselves up after hard knocks from life, and be the strong resourceful women who say 'right, what is in my power to do to make the best out of this for my family?'.

I only hope I can show the same strength of character under such pressure.

You might all be impressed to know about the frugality of the couple getting married today. There's is a 'bring and share' reception this afternoon. We're going along this evening for nibbles.

What a great idea. And good for them to choose a relaxed way of doing it, rather than feeling it must be done a certain way. :D

I love the twists and turns this thread takes, I feel I'm learning lots about so many things, yoghurt making, soap, slimming world red and green days, and each others lives. (and some views of my lovely husband I'd no idea he felt so strongly about!;) :kisses3: )

About the trotters, I made HMKN's sweet and sour chinese style recipe. I think it's in the index, but if not I will index it very soon, DIY permitting!

    Love to all,

    Weezl x

I couldn't either. Sorry about that everyone! Sledgehammer and walnut spring to mind. Thanks for the vibes ceridwen, as you can tell I'm a nicer happier monkey now! Must dig out my copy of netiquette for dummies...

  • thank you for the replies, i didn't mean to come across extremist, i just wanted to share my views. this is what i would say in reply to your questions:
    >But surely while people are still eating meat, it's better that the whole animal gets used rather than some just gets discarded
    agree with you there
    >Not all animals are the same, as we form emotional attachments to different ones
i don't see a difference between any of them
    >If we follow that line of thinking where would you like to stop?
anything that resembles a human, in terms of senses, seeing, hearing, feeling
    >I take it you never buy organic food due to the high land:yeild ratio that also has
i haven't looked into it enough to make a decision.. but i will do
    >Also, given meat's expensive cost you'll sell the cat (expensive meat eater that it is)
the cat in question is my parents, though i grew up with him when i lived there! as far as i know cats need meat to survive, unlike humans
    >And of course we don't need meat to survive, but we've evolved to be hunter/gatherer omnivores who don't just grind vegetables
how we've evolved doesn't concern me, it's a decision i made based on where we are now
i'm just trying to be honest and do what i feel is right.. that's all
