ESELT you can make salsa by draining a can of chopped tomatoes and adding chopped onion herbs and garlic which is good for cheap tortillas too
i make ice cubes out of lemon juice from a bottle and bits of chopped up lemon nice in fizzy water ..................................................and the odd G&T
chopped down all the rocket as it was getting a bit leggy(will it grow back)
am making a batch of rocket pesto using this recipe
http://www.tasteitaliamag.com/content.plm/251
but found this too
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/pestodirucolarocketp_71534.shtml
might make both as i have all the ingredients
anyone know how long pesto keeps in the fridge??

Hi, reading about someone mentioning tortilla chips made me want to share this. My nephews are vegetarian and when they come round for supper, rather than give them sweet snacks I try to keep it savoury (their mother does the sweet thing!!)
Anyway, one of the favourites of the moment is a light supper dish... We buy the Tescos value tortilla chips (18p) and we put them in a large roasting pan. I then sprinkle with a bit of extra salt, cracked black pepper (the eldest loves using the grinder for that!) a sprinkle of chilli powder, or even some very finely chopped chilli if it isn't too strong - both the boys are used to spicy food at my place.. Then we finely chop some onions and sprinkle them all over the tortillas and finally grate whatever cheese we have in the house over it.
Then it goe in the oven or the grill til the cheese has melted which is usually about 10 mins or so. Then it's a fight to divide it up before lil hands start eating!
Very delicious! To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough. If you can't handle me at my worst then you don't deserve me at my best...Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I will try again tomorrow.0 -

Not sure but you can freeze bought pesto - if you do it in an ice cube tray then you can use just what you need
But use a dedicated ice cube tray as it does tend to make the tray smell (and go a bit green)working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Just a tiny little moan.........
The really bad day has gotten even worse today.....
Completely out of the blue, my DH got called back up to the office and was just made redundant. No warning, no nothing. Well i dont think there is much else that can go wrong today eh?
On a positive note, we have our health, full pantry and freezer and most importantly....each other. Of course I know that DH is NOT going to be in the best of moods etc tonight so think I shall be walking on eggshells and supplying lots of hugs and cuddles when needed:A
*saunters back into the darkness* Thank you for listening all.

Hope everything works out for you, re DH it is never easy being put in that position..it has happened to my friend this last week as well, and she is distraught as she is pying her mother's care home fees and worried she will have no wage at all as she has to payback an NVQ qualification..which she had no option but to do as part of her job!
keep thinking positively hun and you will overcome it all xBlackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -

sorry to hear about your DH Kath, esp with no time to prepare yourselves/get used to the idea. My daughter's business went under a couple of months ago and it's pretty tough, but you can get through it. Lots of ideas on here about how to minimise expenditure (not least from the lovely Weezl) and advice on how to deal with any debt that might come up.
remember to look after you as well as DH0 -
((hugs)) for Kath.
It looks like I'm about to be laid off too -- but at least we've had some warning, as the company announced the job cuts in the middle of May. I'm waiting for a call to tell me when to attend a meeting, and am expecting to be given my notice at that -- the meeting already being overdue, as the timings of their processes say mine was due last Friday!!
Have to admit it's this knowledge more than anything else that had me looking for cheap recipe ideas -- and hence led to me stumbling on Weezl's challenge(s).Cheryl0 -
Just caught the tail end of an advert for another 50p 'price crunch' weekend at Morrisons. Didn't catch what was included this time though...........Cheryl0

Hi All
Somehow i posted a post but it seems to have magically disappeared
Anyway start again.
Ive thought of a super moneysaving thing for myself - giving up caffeine - this from someone who has 15+ cups of tea/coffee a day and is partial to a bottle of coke now and then too. So Ive given up - had no tea/coffee since friday last week  and had a bottle of coke friday (small bottle), bottle of coke saturday (little bottle now should specify) and thena can on sunday at work - all diet and now ive had nothign since monday - am feelign absolutely exhausted btu it had to be done - im one low red cell count away form iron injections so it had to go - plus im savign elcetric by not running the kettle! Anyway ..............4 days caffeine free. Also not using decaf stuff as might be too tempted to go back on it.
Munchki - sorry to hear abotu the hubbys job but im sure he will be fine and find soemthign quickly.
Have had a busy day - been to towna dn got nephews birthday present - pc game which i think he'll like.
My littlie has a birthday party tomorrow so free dinner should be helpful for us and means i wont have to cook before work.
Got to do a tesco shop tonight as cupboards are looking a bit bare.
Bf text and requested trifle so have been digging round in the cupboard and found a pack of jelly that needed using and a few tins fo cheap custard form mr T so had a look in coop and they had a tub of whippign cream down to half price so nabbed that - have a sachet of dream toppign left form Xmas should be ok so will bung that in too to help thicken it - bf likes it stodgy - not expecting it to make it to morning!
So thats food sorted as hes had tea in work and me and little one have eaten. Must remember to take a chicken out at lunch time tomorrow - plannign on making a roast, then two chicken and mushrooms pies, then curry for bf, and sandwiches for me on sunday - gutted mr T today had LARGE chickens reduced form a £10 down to £5 but my poor freezer is busting beyond belief so couldnt get one - granted could of gotten one and cooked it tonight but its 26 degrees here today and i dont fancy standing in my tiny boiling hot kitchen!!!Time to find me again0 -
