My dd2 had friends stopping over and they made the no knead bread..and spread value jam on it..then they had a HM pizza, and really loved it..kept them busy all afternoon and they are 17 and 18..didn't think they would go for it..but at 3 am in the morning after watching DVDS etc..i heard " your mum is really cool, mine never lets me make anything!"

My DD also has her own tin..she is diabetic and needs the odd starchy snack in it, i reduce sugar by using spices..and she was nice enough to offer a few scones around..and they never knew the difference.

I know you have to be tough at times, and i very rarely buy anything special in they will always have whatever is in. When they were little we used to make HM rocket iced lollies, they were massive and the envy of the kids in the neighbourhood...they never felt deprived.

Your daughters sound lovely- my little DD loves helping me bake, I hope the interest continues, its such an important skill-thanks

Hello Lovely ones, back now after being away working (and socialising) for a few days...

I've missed you all. Lots to catch up on, I've skimmed, but look forward to reading in more detail in a bit.

Challenge-wise we are still doing well.

Mr Weezl/acetate monkey is going from strength to strength, having just made, last night, his first batch of the no knead bread. Very nice. One of his didn't rise that well either Bunny200, maybe it's something magical about the temperature of our hands or our kitchens!

Eselt, sounds tricky to suddenly have uninvited snackers... The cheapest biscuits I've found are shortbread type ones, but made with stork/cheapy marg rather than butter. I cost them at 1.73p per biscuit. You could maybe get them to make a batch of 24 at the start of the week (41p) and then say 'these are the ones for you to offer your friends this week', and then maybe they'll budget them out over the days?

I don't know much about kids so it might be a crap suggestion!:D

Good idea but our kids would eat them all the first day and say oh well. Then moan there's no biscuits and ask for crisps

elset - if you do make muffins, cakes etc - can you hide some of them in the freezer? As far as I have worked out OH doesn't think there is anything edible in the freezer (now I don't buy icecream very often). So anything in there is apparently invisible :D If they do look in the freezer make sure any cakes are in a tub that isn't too clear and just label the top of it (with fish pie or lentil pate something they don't like)

Then if they see there is only 4 muffins, they might be less inclined to offer them round too much and the next day a few more could magically appear ;) That's what I do :p

And I make twinks hobnobs (the boys help) and when they are cooked hide a small tub of them in my baking ingredients cupboard and then another small tub in the saucepan cupboard or inside the microwave.

OH and the kids will eat them till they're gone so that way they think they are gone and the next day there's suddenly more - thus rationing the sugar :D

I stopped buying so many crisps and they don't really miss it as I serve them good HM meals. The only biscuits I buy are value or Aldi cheap ones and only occasionally do they drop hints about liking some of the more expensive brand ones ;)

Well, after a day of total b*gger all, I've had a nice productive day so far....Yay! I had a 'celebration lunch at work yesterday so I got a free lunch, and yummy it was, then when oh got home he decided he was taking us out for tea (which may or may not have had something to do with me forgetting to take the lasagne red sauce out of the freezer to make tea, whoops) so I got two yummy meals out, and we're going out on saturday (he's paying again, at least, he'd better be) we're going to see batman and have tea with some friends, so that will hopefully be a good time, and technically moneysaving for me....

Back at w**k tonight, was off yesterday and I keep thinking I'm off today, its really confusing, but I've got the wekend off, so mucho relaxation I hope.

Well, better go do some more productive stuff...se you all later

The feeding kids thing is very difficult. Mine are now in their thirties so I have to think back.

I never had biscuits/crisps/snack items/cake in the house. If they wanted a snack they would have bread and jam/marmite. They had their 3 meals and could have the bread at any time. Because I always did it they never complained. Even only 10/20 years ago life was not so 'snacky' and 'instant'.

We did have treats, but that is what they were, treats. My sister always had a biscuit tin and whenever she gave her children a drink she gave them biscuits - all her children are overweight/obese! And she called me cruel because I didn't.

Been  ...primarily about feeding various hangers-on, but it would work for all the time anyway.....

You could make up batches of various recipes, roll them into l-o-n-g skinny sausages & chill well before slicing, to make the mix go further:-
    • Cheese pastry to cut into straws or little bikkies
    • Shortcake with/out dried fruit, choc chips
    • Shortcrust pastry that can be rolled flat, spread with.. ..peanut butter, jam, choc spread, mincemeat, honey, roast veg...wotteffa! then rolled up like a swiss roll to bake
    • Diddly pasties of fruit or savoury..uses up those annoying part-portions of chilli, shepherds pie ect too!
Saw somewhere on another thread, that you can freeze squash in ice cube trays, then the thirsty person puts a cube into a glass & adds the water to diluta as usual...would that help with portion control too?

I had a similar discussion with 13yr old the other week. He wanted to know why we only had own brand crisps and biscuits except when on very good special.

So I said "would he rather have W****** crisps and C******* choc bars and only mince or cheap sausage for dinner each night; or own brand crisps etc and chops, steak, fish etc for dinner", he quickly got the idea as he loves his fish and steak.

This is away of letting them in on things without worrying them that money might be tighter than usual.

Must admit though now he has a parttime job and if we do decide to have a takeaway as a treat he will offer to put some money towards it.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman

I do get irritated when my kids keep coming to me asking for food - because I think they only do it when they're bored! As others have said, I offer them fruit or bread and butter, and if they don't want that they can't really be hungry. sometimes I feel guilty for not having cupboards full of crisps and branded snacks (like my friends do) so its good to have you guys remind me that spending money is not the same as giving love.

Our batch of cakes have all but been demolished (DH helped with that last night) so I'll have to knock up a few more and stash them in the freezer.

talking of DH, he went to our local butchers and asked about pigs trotters. Apparently there's a lot of chinese people who buy them from the butcher so he wasn't surprised to be asked. he'd sold out but said he'd have them at the beginning of the week. Despite that he only sells them for 2p each! but he's glad not to have to pay to have them taken away. He did mention the pigs head but i'm not sure i'm brave enough for that...yet.

He also said that next time DH catches a haul of fish he'll fillet and smoke them for a few quid - result!
