Hi,
Carriebradshaw - I use a normal flask to make my yogurt in, not a wide mouthed one and it turned out fine.. made my first batch thursday night and it was lover-ly... have been mixing it with honey, marmalade, strawberry jam and lemon curd so far..
it is a little bit runnier than commercial yogurts though so I was going to try to strain it, does any one know where i can get muslin or cheesecloth from??Mortgage amount at 31/12/2011 £166,050 now £0 as at Sept 21 - 15yrs 4 months early.0 -

I just made my first batch today too in a normal flask (haven't got a wide mouth one unfortunately!) After 8 hours I was able to pour it into a bowl and I have put it in the fridge to see if it firms up a bit more. If not, I will strain it. I don't have any muslin either, so I will line a colonder with a new jay cloth to strain it! Did you put milk powder in yours? I used 1 litre sterilised full fat milk, brought up to 40 degrees in a saucepan, mixed 2 table spoons of skimmed milk powder in and then 2 table spoons of probiotic plain yoghurt. I pre-heated a flask with boiling water, then poured it out before I put the milk/yoghurt mixture in for 8 hours. Certainly looked like yoghurt when I opened the lid and smelt like it too! I have had the offer of an Easy Yo yoghurt maker from Freecycle which I am going to pick up tomorrow, so I will make some in that and compare the difference. Its worth asking if anyone has a yoghurt maker on Freecycle, as its the sort of gadget people keep in the back of their kitchen cupboards!MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year. That's exactly how i did mine too... thanks for the tip about the jay cloth - never thought about that!!!
i'll try it with my next batch, see how it goes, and hope it doesn't turn blue from the cloth dye!
I didn't want to get another gadget so that is why i used the flask instead of the yogurt maker, we don't have the biggest kitchen in the world and most of that is taken up with my Kenwood mixer.. which i use every day so can justify the loss of space..(already have an icecream maker and food processor sitting in cupboards gathering dust)

Hi folks, I need to say thank you for the 'no need to knead' bread recipe; at long last I got around to trying it, after finishing off all my 16p loaves out of the freezer. Mine worked out a little more costly than Weezl's because I was extravagant and used stoneground wholemeal flour (93p) and a sachet of Hovis fast acting yeast (10p), so my total was £1.03 for 4 loaves - no kneading needed. :T It'll work out about 2p per slice and it tastes lovely! That will make it 31p for beans & toast lunch for 3 tomorrow :TI reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

I decided to try something I had read about and put a bit of chocolate in my bolognaise sauce, it was pretty good, and when I unwrapped the Green and Black's chocolate (75% off) there was a recipe on the inside that I thought would be good for Christmas gifts etc... The pic looks lovely, in a little kilner jar (I love those babies!)
Pear and Chocolate Spread
3kg pears, ripe but firm- peeled, cored and quartered
750g granulated sugar
Juice of a large orange
Juice of a lemon
250g 72% cooks chocolate (sure you can sub it..)
In a large heavy based pan mix the sugar with the juices, add the pears and mix carefully
Heat gently to a simmer then remove from the heat and put into a bowl
Add the chocolate and stir until melted
Cover the bowl with greaseproof paper, allow to cool then place in a cool place overnight
Pour the mixture into the pan, bring to the boil and bubble for 40 mins-1 hour until it reaches 105*C or thickens on a cool plate)
Spoon into sterilised jars, cover with a wax circle and seal
Will keep for up to 3 months, refrigerate once open
*It is supposed to make 3 regular sized jars
God is good, all the time
Do something that scares you every day

Forgive me fellow weezlites, for I have sinned!!!!!
I have been meaning to make the no knead bread for aaaaaaaaaages. I decided, in a fit of enthusiasm that I am going to get up early and make some tomorrow.
Looked in my saved recipes.....can't find it.
Checked out weezl's wonderful recipe index on page 1 and found it. BUT....maybe it's because I'm the wrong side of a bottle of wine (on offer at Mr T's, half price) but it doesn't seem to say how much yeast to use? Am I being dumb (or just a little bit tipsy?)
I normally use dried yeast. Can someone please point me in the right direction for how much to use?

Shaz will look the recipe out! From recollection bicarb, lavender & rosemary from Weezls garden). Please reassure OH that I'm not out to harm you (Weezl will vouch for me lol!) just hopefully help you relax. Bits are annoying to wash off but I enjoy the feeling of luxury plus the herbs are then fresh while infusing...not good with any oly stuff though as it sticks to the bath and a mare to get off!..I prefer the milk myself TBH and havent tried the fizz yet. Will try bath bombs again - did them previously but theyre more fiddly!
Welcome BB. Great that you have come out of lurkdom! Look forward to hearing from you again!
Had my chilling & watched "bucket list" courtesy of Virgin pay per view movies as had seen weather man before but didnt realise lol! It was lovely & I had a little weepie! Much need chilling & off to bed in a mo!
Re muslin you can get it from any shop that sells fabric - really as its comonly used as lining/pattern so probably cheaper there than a cook shop where it tends to be more expensive. Must get some as used my last lot for marmalade. Sweet dreams all!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -

If it's any help, I used one single sachet of Hovis fast action yeast to the 1.5kg of flour and it turned out fineI reserve the right not to spend.

thanks for that
I'm a 'dried yeast girl' as well -- and hadn't noticed there wasn't any specific measurements on the recipe (and I have plans to try it in the next few days too)Cheryl0 -
I find kitchen (paper) towels good for lining a colander to strain things...I used it for the gallons of crab(apple) juice I made last year and it doesn't come apart...have strained yogurt through it too
