Okay, back home, loved the piggy pie pics!! Mmm... and loving the pics of peeps homegrown veges!! It is winter here and I am thinking about getting ready for planting some veges soon, have to look out some seeds and see when it is best to plant!! Have some limited space, but even a few free veges is better than nothing...:T

Am also thinking that since I have enough food, personal and cleaning products to last to end of the year tucked away (I even have 13kgs of laundry powder  don't know what possessed me...this will last me ages!!) then I am in need of a challenge myself to live off what I have.

So, without going into too much detail (due to diff currency) I am going to allow myself $100 for the next ten weeks, just to stock up on fruit/veges etc when needed.

Very excited now, as I want to go and inventory lol. :rotfl: :j

AND PS: The choc orange cake was so YUMMY, is there a cakes thread to post it in somewhere anyone know?? Don't think it would fit into weezls challenge lol, so didn't want to post here...

    Hi,

Carriebradshaw - I use a normal flask to make my yogurt in, not a wide mouthed one and it turned out fine.. made my first batch thursday night and it was lover-ly... have been mixing it with honey, marmalade, strawberry jam and lemon curd so far..

it is a little bit runnier than commercial yogurts though so I was going to try to strain it, does any one know where i can get muslin or cheesecloth from??

Havent tried it - but having read before now that one can use a pair of old tights to strain paint - then logic tells me they could also possibly be used to strain yogurt. Same principle I guess?

Had a fish version of shephards pie for dinner last night....

Fishermans Pie (£3 for 5 people- extravagent by Weezels standards!)

3 packs scottish kippers (average 66p each from Tesco with knob of butter in pack) £1.98 (you could easily reduce this to 2 packs by adding veg)
    flour 10p
    milk 30p
    potato 20p
    parsnip 20p
    cheese 20p

Peel skin off kippers. Chop into 1" strips. Place in oven dish.
Make basic white sauce - butter (free with fish), flour, 3/4 pint milk, pour over fish.
Make potato and parsnip mash. Place on top of fish and sauce, smooth with a fork. Top with grated cheese.
Place in oven for 30 mins at 180 degrees C.

    Makes enough to feed 5.
Quickly boiling the skins also kept the cat and the dog happy!

Shaz will look the recipe out! From recollection bicarb, lavender & rosemary from Weezls garden). Please reassure OH that I'm not out to harm you (Weezl will vouch for me lol!) just hopefully help you relax. Bits are annoying to wash off but I enjoy the feeling of luxury plus the herbs are then fresh while infusing...not good with any oly stuff though as it sticks to the bath and a mare to get off!..I prefer the milk myself TBH and havent tried the fizz yet. Will try bath bombs again - did them previously but theyre more fiddly!

If bits really annoy you then you can put your bath stuff in the foot of an old pair of tights (or make a little muslin bag if you want something a bit more decorative!) All the good stuff comes out in the bath and you can empty the bits away in the compost/rubbish bin after. I first thought of this after someone gave me a Lush bath bomb which had glitter in - lovely smells etc but glitter everywhere for what seemed like months afterwards!

thanks ISOM, BARGAINHUNTER,shaz, shala moo, ceridwen and anyone I may have forgotten for yog making tips  I've just warmed my flask and milk, waiting for it to cool down enough now before I can add my starter. Not got any milk powder,I will get some for next attempt though. I have got a sieve so if it needs straining I'll put kitchen towel in it and use that. Great ideas about coffee filters, jay cloths, and tights though, I'm sure I've got an old cheesecloth blouse somewhere come to think of it :) I hope it works,I love my yoghurt :D

btw if it works and I get yog and some whey, what can I use the whey for and how does it keep?

    Morning all

I used a triangular bandage to strain my quark!!!!

Tip :when straining for long periods use plastic sieve!!! or you get rusty patches ..........................the voice of experience!!!

thought you guys might like this recipe. It is in one of my many recipe folders, torn from a magazine, one of the weekend paper ones I think, article by Sybil Kapoor

    Serves 4
    250g dried chick peas
2 tsp finely chopped fresh ginger
    3/4 tsp turmeric
    1/2 tsp chilli powder
    3tbsp oil
    2 small onions, finely chopped
1 fat clove garlic, finely chopped
    1 fresh chilli
    2 cloves
    1/2 tsp garam masala
140g fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped (I usually use a tin)
    salt
    handful coriander, optional

soak the chickpeas overnight. cook the chickpeas with 1tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp turmeric and 1/4tsp chilli in 2 litres water until soft.

heat the oil in a large pan and add onion, garlic, 1tsp ginger and the fresh chilli. Fry until onion caramelised, stir in cloves, 1/2tsp garam masala, 1/4tsp turmeric and 1/4tsp chilli powder if you like a spicy curry. cook for a minute or two, add toms, stir until mixture forms a thick paste and starts to release oil.

tip in the chick peas with all their cooking juices, simmer for 20 minutes or until liquid reduces and thickens slightly into a delicious sauce. Season with salt and reheat when needed. garnish with fresh coriander if using

this is yummy, freezes well and we tend to have it with nan and lemony dahl or crispy, buttery jkt pots and lots of green salad from the garden

I read somewhere that you can use the whey for scones and pancakes, like you would with buttermilk. Haven't tried it yet though...

Not sure how long it would keep, i would usually freeze it..

Tried a second batch on no-knead bread y'day evening (1st batch was great) - left it too rise and forgot about it :( when i came to check it, it had over risen and then collapsed... i still cooked it though (waste not want not and all that) it was fine, just wasn't a very tall loaf.
