Am really intrigued with the pig's head idea and excited about seeing your results. My OH would love to try it, the only thing is that brawn doesn't appeal to me very much.
I made the pate, but I must confess I altered the recipe somewhat, some tomato puree and chilli powder was added to mine. It was all eaten up at a BBQ so must have been good.
You've almost convinced me to make yoghurt now too, if only to freeze it as an alternative to ice cream. I can't stand the stuff normally but OH loves it so I might give it a go.
Thanks all so much for your tips!odi et amo0 -
i have done well at lidls today, huge brocolli half price at 34p, 2 herb/or garlic frozen baguettes 54p for the pair, big bag of frozen taglitelle in mushroom sauce for £1.69. This comes to £2.57 this will feed the 6 of us tonight and tastes delicious! I just chop the brocolli and add it to the saucepan with the pasta in, you add a small amount of water to the bag of pasta, and it cooks up really tasty. Now i know you could make a pasta dish far cheaper, but this is a treat meal for our family!not very often we get garlic bread!
i have also bought a bag of their frozen stir fried vegetable mix, for about the same cost £1.60 something, i thought i would cook that up and mix that with a cheap value bag of pasta, that will make loads.
im going to make the gnocci for tea tonight, i have some frozen home made pasta sauce that i am thawing ready to go on the top, thought i would mix some quorn fillets with it, i dont know how much weezl costed the gnocci mix, but the quorn fillets were less that £2 so another cheap meal for the 6 of us!It's the start of the no takeaway challenge.0 -
I'm making the gnocchi too! It's "resting" at the sausage shape stage - I thought I'd get the girls to help me make the little gnocchis as they're happier to try new foods if they've had a part in making them.
not sure what sauce to do with them...I used to buy ready made gnocchi years ago and make a very time consuming tomato and emmental sauce (a delia-esque recipe from Sainsbury magazine) I've got some nettles I foraged this morning. So probably make something tomato based and stir the nettles in at the last moment, would that work? How my cooking habits have changed!
I didn't read the gnocchi recipe properly and made up the whole packet of mash....do you think it will freeze ok? If we don't like the gnocchi then I could always use it to make potato bread couldn't I?weaving through the chaos...0 -
Gnocchi with any type of tomato sauce is lovely IME, esp if you grate a bit of cheese on top and finish it off in the oven or under the grill.
Hang on - have you made too much gnocchi or too much mash?
You can freeze gnocchi and cook it from frozen and you can freeze mash and thaw it out and use it. I would freeze the mash in small amounts so if you just need a bit, to, say, thicken a soup, it's easy to use.0 -
Afternoon all, ISOM posting at Weezl's! Weezl is busy in the kitchen having scrubbing piggy & just about to singe him! I'll let her tell the tale of the butcher 'cos its hers to tell! I had to see piggy - hard not when its in a plain bag for all to see! Long match is being weilded cos she cant locate the blow torch! hehe! She's very brave! He is quite a sweet (if dead) looking piggy but there was a rather large shreik from the kitchen (I removed myself fairly sharp!) "what" says I "its got teeth" shouts a panicked Weezl! (Mouth being singed...running commentery!). Anyway, I may be mad (eyelashes going!) but I ant that mad!! She's taken a piccy for the macarbe (?sp) but had to stand on a chair! Its huge & very heavy! Bloke in the car park though it highly amusing that there was a distressed maiden standing in the car park (waiting for chauffer to bring the car round dont you know!) with a pigs head at her feet!. Ok latest update - "the long matches are carp...I've got my bic" which is apparently very good! (never was on my legs...always managed to draw blood but thn I'm not dead so that may be why?!! Possibly not something bic will use in their advert eh! "Bic...the best a pig can get"

I find this too and used to teach my mums group the same, also when kids eat with friends/at school they are more likely to try new things
