redglass - runner beans, lettuce and onions; otherwise it's not a real allotment, lol!
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

I really do need help and advice (if I take it on). I've looked for an allotment thread on MSE but couldn't find one.

  • Exciting news Redglass:j
I'm still waiting for the guy to finish clearing his current veggies from the allotment so that I can take over the half i am having for next year - can't wait.

I googled allotments and it threw up loads of interesting sites. My favourite was a liverpool one which I found when I googled "how to grow butternut squash" will try and post link for you.

  • Thanks for the link, Sophiesmum. I came from Liverpool originally so that feels very appropriate! I'll be up there (the allotments, not Liverpool) to view the plot today (and fit in a bit of lurcher-walking). I'm really excited about this, but on the other hand I've a lot of commitments and I don't want to deprive someone else of the lotty and then not use it properly. On the other hand, I'm not a spring chicken anymore and having a lotty would probably mean i could retire a bit earlier and not starve! :D

  • Hope it works out for you redglass, and you aren't faced with a forrest of 6ft high weeds when you view it.

To try and get me motivated:o here is my to do list for today:
    • make a loaf
    • clean house with stardrops
    • rip out the remaining runner bean plants and clear tom plants from hanging baskets - have a look if there is anything suitable to plant over winter in them:confused:
    • clear out the boot of my car as it is full of stuff left in transit between here and mums over past few weeks. There is a whiff developing, which i think may be a two week old marrow in a plastic bag, it has probably turned to soup by now:eek:
    • finish writing eulogy for Andrew's service on Monday.
    Reduce,re-use, recycle.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. I'm off visiting but will try to pop online to keep up with what's happening and see how the preparations are going for the 100 in 1000 challenge. :)

Frugal living challenge - living on little in 2025 while frugalling towards retirement.
  • Enjoyed the date last night, the evening went really quickly so that's a good sign... I'd see him again, just have to wait and see if he wants to see me!

I've just put an offer in on another house, saw it this morning and made an offer on the spot. It was like walking into a time warp, owned by an elderly guy who has now gone into a home. The most revoltingly coloured bathroom suite I've ever seen, and the original 1978 kitchen + appliances. At least the boiler is almost new, so is the double glazing. A definite project, but for the right price I could really do a lot with it. Just got to wait to hear back from the owners now! The neighbour came up and said hello before he even knew I was about to look at the place, and he was very friendly, which is a real bonus. He'd lived there 25 years so you know it's decent when people are prepared to stay in an area that long term (or otherwise it's so awful no-one can manage to sell and move out....)! I'm pretty sure it's the first of the two options for this place....

  • Hi Lynda,
Things are looking positive in your life at the moment. Glad you enjoyed the date, you never know what may develop from there;) but even if he doesn't get back in touch at least you had a good night out with someone with similar interests:D
House sounds like a good project too, hope you hear about one of your offers soon, keep us posted:D

  • I've just seen someone park their horse and cart outside the Co-op and go and do their shopping. I know petrol is expensive, but I didnt realise things were that bad! :rotfl:

I'll be seeing my date again when he gets back from Soctland, as he's going there next week :j

No house news yet though.... I expect I'm going to be kept in suspense until at least Monday now.
