Whilst I agree with the negative opinions voiced about the Daily Mail, I should point out that the Guardian apparently broke this story: http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/money/2008/06/lloyds_blog.html

    (Insert "nanny state" rant here!)

It is not and should not be the bank's problem. Two reasons:

    a) It's like saying the internet is to blame for movie piracy, that cars are to blame for idiotic driving, the usual stuff. Which is equally stupid as saying that quills are to blame for the works of Shakespeare (nope, they're entirely the fault of the bloke himself). They are enablers, but they are not the root cause!

    b) If the banks were to end up monitoring all under-18 transactions, that would take up a lot of time, which equates to a lot of money. I can't see them charging just for child accounts, so the rest of the customer base would end up sharing the cost incurred by lazy parenting (through reduced interest rates, increased charges etc).

Heh, I probably sound like that stuck up moaning rag myself, but really parents should stop palming off the responsiblity of raising their kids onto the companies and the government, and take some responsiblity themselves.

No but you can spend cash as soon as you steal it or find it on the floor, card's are more resilient today from cloning and if this happens you are covered by your bank.

I disagree, whilst you right that the internet is not to blame for internet piracy, the authorities must fine the ISP's which allow uploading, sharing and downloading pirated content instead of consumers who do so. If the source does not exist, the problem will not occur either.

Banks cannot wash their hands off this reponsibility. If they do not want to monitor transactions, then instead of sending the cards out without asking the parents, they should allow parental control and only issue a card to a youngster where it has been requested by the parent in the first place. That way, the parent has signed away their right to complain afterwards, the kid has got a debit card and the press have got nothing to write about.

There are a number of prepaid cards which are available to under 18's with the under18 being the additional cardholder - some are listed at www.prepaid365.com - however, the main difference here was that the bank sent the cards out without informing the parents and thats when you open your self up to criticism.

In fact one of the old Maestro prepaid cards was even available to 10 year olds as long as their was parental consent! That way, the parents will have to take responsibility and the banks and prepaid card providers don't have to stand a public trial everytime

Thats my two bits and more on this!

I can see why you are called Psycho_Mantra.

isnt the point of using Visas for online purchases the fact that when they were only Issued to over 18s it was a system to ensure they werent selling to minors????

Not at all, "Visa" is a method of payment, "valid ID" is a method of stopping shops selling certain product to minors, if their is no ID verification system in place for internet purchases then tough! The problem here is the lack of education amongst adults, soon as they here the word "Visa" ooooh panic, here comes debt, here comes responsibility, ehm, no...Don’t think so, it is a payment method and IS more secure than cash.
    End of debate.
