Daily Mail - Front Page

Visa Cards for 11 year olds

Hi Everyone,

Has anybody seen the front page of the Daily Mail today? About a 15 year old boy buying Cigarettes online using a visa debit card supplied by lloyds tsb.

Basically his dad thinks it's lloyds tsb's thought, now i'm 15 myself so this is coming from a 15 year old. Who if anybody agrees with me that it is the kid's/parent's thought? At the end of the day fair enough Lloyds supply the card without informing parents however how can lloyds be at thought for the kid buying the Cigarettes?

It made it sound like lloyds are the only bank.

I just wondered what everybody thought.

Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom, when you are a little older you will learn that the Daily Mail talks, thinks and prints rubbish and is best used for wrapping your chips in.

It is now so easy to obtain a prepaid Mastercard or Maestro that I can't see why people are complaining about kids being given a real debit card.

I have a daughter who is a little older than 11, not by much, and we definitely got a letter asking if we agreed to her getting a debit card.

I disagree. Wouldn't wrap my chips in that rubbish.

I wouldn't use it as lavatory paper either - your @rse would end up with more !!!!!! on it than before you started.

Haha like the replies. However now Sky News have got their paws on the story. At this rate when I open the account in just over a weeks time they would have stopped issuing visa cards.

I just can't understand what the big thing is as BruceyBonus said it's so easy to obtain prepaid cards. Lloyds can only do so much to watch customers so surely they shouldn't be blamed.

    Tom

I'm 15 aswell, and it is obviously the kids issue. The bank cant be expected to check millions of transactions every day.

I don't think its Lloyds' fault, it is the responsibility of the parents, the child with the card, and the vendor of whatever (cigarettes in this case).

Obviously its hard for the vendor to check, when anyone can get any type of card, so that means that the parent should be checking up on these things and educating their child accordingly, they should decide whether or not their child is mature/responsible enough to have a debit card in the first place

If the bank give the card without telling parents, then a parent must realise when they've got it, they must notice the envelopes that come through the door with Lloyds TSB written on them. If I was a parent and letters from a bank came for my child that I didn't know of, I'd certainly look into it, and if necessary, tell the bank to cancel a card if the child wasn't mature enough for it

    That's me done, for now

Until I was about 16 and a half, my mum would constantly peer over my shoulder (trying not to make it obvious) everytime I received some post (as it came when she was at home). There is absolutely no way I could have received a card without her knowing!

Its a brilliant idea to allow children to have Visa cards. The trouble has been giving so called adults cards and they have been behaving like children with them. The time these children are grown up they will I'm sure be alot more responsible than alot of adults.

I think its good giving young people cards as well, because it teaches you how all the banking stuff works, but without getting massive charges etc.

However, in my case I've got carried away, I've got far too many accounts, I happened to have my passport in my pocket in town today, so I just decided to open another at Abbey. Even though I know about their bad customer service
