Suggestion to stop the Spamers on HERE

  • I agree the mailto: link to report is anoying/useless if you use webmail/aol.

However I think another issue is the ammonut of time it can take for the forums moderators to act on the spam. some of the 'petrol card' posts were online for nearly 24hours last week, long after someone had reported it. Maybe the site needs more moderators?

My enjoyment of this site is being ruined by the constant postings by the idiots,,you know who i mean.

Is it possible to change the posting rules so that you for example have to have posted on 10 different posts before you can start your own?

i know that this may prevent a few bargains being brought to our attention but it would stop the 1 time posters filling the lists with their bogus posts!

    Any other ideas?

Just ignore it, maybe it's because I've been using the net since year dot but the spam just stands out like a sore thumb. I actually find it quite amusing when spam is responded to. As if they ever come back to look at what people have said in response to spam. Most humurous.

You can usually spot spamers because of all the spilling mistaks.
I remember when you could smoke on the bus
  • Its easy to say "just ignore it", but if you use the MSE RSS feed (as i do), you quickly find your RSS feed reader full of all this spam.

Something must be done as MSE is now getting a very bad reputation on the web due to the poor controls over posting/spamming.

    Sorry, rant over.....

Why not have a Spam button like the Thanks, Quote Edit buttons, when say 10 people have clicked the button the post is automatically removed

how about moderating new users? may filter out many of the chancers, if they cant spread their links/trojans etc so easily..
The simple answer is to have all newbies first few posts filtered ie they have to post through a mod for the first few times!
The majority of spammers get fed up having to make genuine posts and wait for them to be approved etc etc
Once a newbie has made 5 approved posts over 5 days etc they can post on their own.
Might not cut out 100% of them but I bet they would be gretly reduced
It's not just about the money

That would create a lot more work for everyone than deleting a few spam posts, and many new users would not understand why their post had not appeared immediately and might be alienated away from the place.

This suggestion won't be popular but we need to highlight spam (as happens now), not ignore it. All MSE'rs (especially new members) need to be made aware that these posts are dishonest. When a solution to the problem is put in place THEN eveyone can ignore it.
It's BARGAIN, BARGAIN, got it? Bargin my ****.

Yes spam is annoying BUT when I scan the thread titles I can see straight away which are

    A. spam

    B. Ones I dont want to read

    C. threads with interest to me.

Guess what, I dont look at A or B

Bad idea. I recently suggested here that people not put up grabbit offers promoting cheap fags, because there's no point in saving money if the thing you'd be getting cheap was likely to end your life prematurely and harm children.

I took a lot of abuse from people addicted to tobacco for expressing that view. I think there are plenty of people who would use such a facility to censor opinions they strongly disagreed with.
