how about moderating new users? may filter out many of the chancers, if they cant spread their links/trojans etc so easily..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Not all pc's have outlook express set up I don't on several pc's at home accept one I am using now. Most of them that kids have use web mail
Most of the above has been mentioned before but nothing ever gets done, and mean time that scam bucket keeps up his wonderful creation that being a low life scum bucket, I do pity his mother0 -

If you have the internet surely you have email???
Mailto: links require either an email client like Thunderbird or Outlook installed and setup.
A lot of people these days use webmail, which is either going to take a bit of setting up (possibly purely for the purpose of reporting posts on here - and why should a person go to that hassle?) or depending on the webmail provider might not be possible.
Like I say, some ISPs don't even provide you with popmail because so many people use webmail, so not providing it saves money - no point offering a service if nobody uses it.
Again, depending on the webmail provider, the browser used and any plugins used, you CAN make most webmail services work with mailto: links, but most people don't have the knowledge or inclination to mess around with a bodged solution purely to report spammers on one website.
The abuse team would get notified of things much faster and more often if they stopped using mailto:.brightonman123 wrote: »how about moderating new users? may filter out many of the chancers, if they cant spread their links/trojans etc so easily..
It'll take more man (or woman!) hours to moderate every new user than it will to respond to post reports about the fraction of a percent that DO spam. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

Most of the moderators/admin on this site are volunteers and don't have the time to check every new member (especially when you think there were 4.6 million visitors in May!!) and they rely on current members reporting spammers.Debt Free as of 17/01/2009 Turtle Power!!

I'm not too techno savvy, but I assumed if you had internet access you would have some form of email client (going on my experience).
I agree thou that a general 'report this' button would prob work better than having to email, thou who's to stop people hitting 'spam' just because they don't like what's being posted (which I have seen threatened before, even if they didn't end up reporting)

Yeah my laptop works with Yahoo/MSN and Hotmail, every time I have hit the
triangle and tried to send mail, I get told it does not support Hotmail!!! I don't understand.0 -
more admins, 4.6 million visitors = a lot of potential volunteers.
While I love this site and spend most of my time here (certainly 85% of my net time) I'd rather not have the responsibility of being admin!! I can barely find the time to update my own thread between reading all the new ones and commenting on my faves

True, but if it hacks you off, then doesn't take much effort to stop it, given the powers. Doesn't have to be a full time responsibility, as easy as firing off that email. The current system is too slow to react. It's particularly annoying if you are a "new posts" clicker.
It doesn't really bother me all that much, because I'm on here quite a lot. I generally just roll my eyes then click another link.
I think generally it's the newer members that are 'at risk' as they may click a link etc hoping for help, not realising that it's just a nasty spammer.
The same goes for trolls, there has been a spate of trolls posting on the DFW board. New posters are asking for help and despite however they got themselves into debt they are looking for help to get out of the mess and pay it back. There has been a lot of trolls recently just slating them for getting into debt, which obviously makes the new poster not want to post anymore when they could have gotten good advice.

There's nothing to stop people doing that just now I guess. At least if it was done through the board, and only available to those logged in, the abuse team would know who was reporting the posts and know who to slap, as opposed to the current system where anyone can report the posts from any email address, untraceably. If you stamp out that idiot (delete his/her account in the first few seconds) who comes around midnight every night , he will eventually move on.
You say that as if there's only one of them. Spamming's an industry, and there are thousands of bots out there doing it. Deleting their posts is a minor annoyance to them, since it costs them so little to do it.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

A lot of new posters on the DFW board generally post in the early hours, as they can't sleep worrying etc and end up trawling the net and eventually finding MSE.
A 'time signed up' ban is no good, as the bots will just sign up in the afternoon.
