Bad idea. I recently suggested here that people not put up grabbit offers promoting cheap fags, because there's no point in saving money if the thing you'd be getting cheap was likely to end your life prematurely and harm children.

I took a lot of abuse from people addicted to tobacco for expressing that view. I think there are plenty of people who would use such a facility to censor opinions they strongly disagreed with.

You took a lot of criticism for seemingly trying to impose your own moral judgements on a thread clearly titled "For Smokers." I don't recall there being any "abuse" as you describe it.. That thread has now mysteriously disappeared, so tell me, where's the censorship there?

Since you raise the matter, it was personal abuse directed towards me, and I don't know how expressing an opinion, and a wish that people would restrain themselves from promoting cheap tobacco on an open forum, is imposing anything on anyone. I have experience through work and my fairly long life of dealing with addicts, and I have found that many often have a distorted moral sense. I am not responsible for the deletion of the thread we are referriing to.

But back to the point of this thread - I think that people would misuse a button to cancel spam in order to eliminate points of view with which they strongly disagreed, or to exclude people who they did not like. It could become a form of bullying.

I do think a trial membership period would be the best way to deter and deflect spammers.
  • My suggestion on a number of other threads about the amount of spam is to allow Board Guides to remove cross-board posted spam (ie. not just stuff that appears on their boards but also everywhere else it s posted)... simple solution but I am yet to get a response as to why this isn't an option from MSE?

The difference, as I stated above, would be that all post reports would be logged and traceable back to whoever reported the post. If it was found that someone was reporting posts simply because they didn't agree with the content (if, say, the post was promoting cheap cigarettes, beer or McD's, and someone was on a moral crusade to state the obvious and moan about how these things are bad for you), the board guides/abuse team could deal with that person.

In theory that might be ok, but what would a trial period involve? I can't think of anything you could do that either (a) wouldn't create more work for the staff than they have already or (b) wouldn't put new genuine posters off posting.
