Day off today and supposed to be taking DS2 to the orthodontist. OH has phoned to say the roads are really bad, which interprets "you would have to be really barmy or enjoy sledging whilst using your car as a sledge to go out in this'' Have heeded his advice and cancelled appointment. I do really need to get DS2 there as bits keep dropping off!

I have a quandry and was after some advice. We are in the process of getting a 4x4 pickup (get it Christmas Eve). We've thought long and hard about this and have decided its a necessity. OH needs to get into work (I'm a bit more flexible) and its the compromise from a van. We are going to finance this by purchasing it on a 0% credit card which is 0% for 13 months. I see this (car financing) as a way of life, kind of a necessary evil, so do I put in my siggy? The aim is to clear the interest bearing cards before the 0% runs out and then shuffle the balance round to either a fixed rate LOB or another 0% deal. Any ideas, does this sound like a plan Stan?

Sound good to me. But what about the van your OH recently bought? Are you selling that?

  • Lucielle obviously its your choice but I agree that a car is an essential and if you are 'borrowing' in the best way you can for it then you can't really do any more. I see the car and the mortgage as a necessary (for me) and feel better if I keep checking that I am the best deals etc.

Maybe add it to your signature but as a separate from your original debt so that it doesn't demoralise you and so that you can see it going down the way it would have done without the new purchase. That way you are accepting its more debt but you are still working to your original plan?

Yes V the van is going in part exchange, it enabled us to get a lot more for his car doing it this way.

KM, that's a good idea, will probably do that. I know its still debt but just didn't want to put it in the siggy, daft I know.

Well if you're getting a better deal this way and 0% credit for 13 months that seems an even better deal. Once the 13 months is up you'll have paid even more of the debt down so should be in a good position to apply successfully for whatever good deals are out there at that point, 0% or low lob. You'll almost be debt free by then or even df if you continue battering the figures at the same rate as the last few years.

Sorry that's 3 good deals in 1 post.

My car is making lots of noises and its coming up to the 100k milage mark. Its heater has almost given up which OH thinks might be the cylinder head gasket=expensive. So a change of car for me might also be on the cards but adopting the ostrich at the moment.
