My newish USB 3 (my passport) HDD drive is supposed to be USB3, yet when plugged into a USB 3 socket on my laptop (with drivers installed) - only transfers data at 12Mbps maximum Any suggestions why ?

I have a back up of my Operating System (Win 8.1) on Flash drive but not my data ! Is it acceptable for me to add my data in a separate folder on the same drive or will this affect the boot sequence and cause me problems if I ever need to rebuild my laptop ?
