It's a paid-for product, so Microsoft's website should be your first port of call.

Alternatives : Serif PagePlus (Windows) - also paid but cheaper and better. Scribus (Linux/Windows) - free.

If you specifically need Publisher, you'll have to pay.

If I go for scribus (windows) do I have to watch out for virus' and search bars etc being added?

As a matter of principle you always watch out for unwanted passengers when you install freeware.

I've only installed Scribus on Linux, where it's not a problem. That said, Scribus downloads are available straight from SourceForge, and that's as safe as you'll get.
