My eldest has applied for student finance as an independent student as they will be 25 on 4th September. SLC have now said that the academic year starts on 1st September and therefore they will only be 24 so don't class as an independent student. I can't find anywhere that defines the academic year start date on SLC. The…

HMRC not passing on payments to SLC
Bit of a rant... A few years ago I changed jobs. A couple of years later on my student loan statement was a line adding £1000+ to my loan because HMRC had decided my employer had not deducted anything from my salary for student loan for the previous 18 months. HMRC were very extremely arrogant about it st the time when I…

Is a loan worth it..
I am going back to UNi as a very mature student (54) and have money set aside from redundancy which will easily cover me for the years top-up degree that I'm undertaking. I seem to think that with the rates the way they are, that there is no incentive for me to take out a loan for fees or maintenance... Am I just being…

Budget for mature student living expenses
Any ideas on a reasonable monthly amount for this? The course is very intensive so there is no possibility of part-time paid work. It is offered in Bristol; Leeds; Liverpool, so obviously housing costs might vary depending on location.

Student loan for Pensioner - seriously?
I've been talking to a friend on the phone, who tells me excitedly that she has been accepted for a BA course at her local university, and that she has got a student loan to cover the fees. What intrigues me (because I am envious and would like to do the same) is that she says that because her only income is from her…

Where do new/soon to be graduates look for jobs?
Where I work we used to contact uni careers service and would get 100 applications of which about a dozen might be suitable for interview, not we get 2 or 3. Salaries remain competitive. It is not a huge company who can rely on name recognition or a huge social media budget. So how to reach graduates and those soon to…
