Diversification Index trackers
I hear the word "diversification" all over the place since reading about investment. It's advised to spread your investments across several companies but I wanted to ask if something like a FTSE 100 tracker or FTSE All Share are considered as 1 fund or is this seen as diversifying? After all your money is being invested in…

How many funds should you have in your portfolio?
I have just read an article on how many funds the average investor holds in their portfolio and it suggests 10-16. Now I am investing in the VGLS 60 which is obviously meant as an all in one portfolio comprising 10 index funds and wondered if I should stick to this solely or invest in other funds as well? What are the…

Castle Trust, Fortress bonds
Has anyone any experience of the Castle trust and their Fortress bonds. Interest rates seem better than many at 4.5% over 5 years, 3 years at 4% but eligible for an ISA which beats NS&I pensioner bonds. They don't seem to appear on this site. Interestingly a google ad for them appeared when searching the forum! thanks

Transferring ISAs
Whilst I know you can consolidate several old ISAs into one new one, does opening the new one (even if you only transfer funds in rather than depositing new money) constitute your one new ISA for the year? So by way of an example, could I transfer my existing ISAs into a new one with say the Coventry BS and also open a…

£1,245,000 in your account gives extra £210 in interest.
There’s a bit of a Monopoly theme to the news today, OR is a early April 1st Joke. http://metro.co.uk/2015/03/23/bank-error-in-your-favour-collect-1-25million-5116311/?ito=facebook Great for him BUT never happens to me

Savings Location
I have ~£26k in a cash ISA which is maturing next month. I would like to keep £15000 of this somewhere "accessible" as this would be my emergency (it equates to 6mths pay). As for the other £10k, I will be putting this into a S&S isa. My other savings are all in the usual current accounts available. I don't really want to…

What is the difference between a funds share classes?
Hello, I'm a first time investor and interested in investing into a FTSE100 tracker in a Halifax S&S ISA. I've found the HSBC FTSE 100 INDEX ACC NAV fund, which looks ideal. However, I have also noticed there is a C Class version of this fund called HSBC FSTE 100 INDEX C ACC NAV. Can somebody explain what the difference of…

Santander ISA
In April last year I visited this site to get recommendations for a best buy ISA. MSE advised that a Santander ISA was paying 1.6% and that if there was over 20K in it at the end of the year the rate would rise to 2%. Santander have now written to me to say that the rate will be REDUCED to 1% which obviously I am not happy…

Best thing to do with savings...
So I've recently decided to embark on a cost cutting/savings drive over the next 24 months. The aim is to add about £30K to my short terms savings in the next 2 years. It's a large figure but should be achievable given me+wife's income. The start of the saving drive it swap my current BMW which I worked out recently is…

NS&I no confirmation
I applied by post for £10,000.00 worth of +65 bonds in January but have not received any confirmation from them that I have the bonds, my cheque was cashed on the 22nd of January. If you ring the helpline they tell you that they cannot help without a purchase reference number which can only be obtained by written…

Help to buy ISA - advice for the meantime
Official MSE Insert: You may also find our fully researched Help to Buy ISA guide helpful. Back to the original post... I'd like to open a help to buy ISA, but from what I understand, they're not available just yet. I've recently inherited my money, and I'd like some advice as to what to do with it while I'm waiting for…

ISA rules re multiple providers
I'm reviewing ISA investments for the next tax year, as I have a Halifax bond due to mature at the beginning of April and need to find a home for the funds. I already have a Halifax cash ISA, which pays the same rate gross as I would get for renewing the Halifax bond - so obviously a better option there. Santander have a…

Good time to sell funds?
Judging by my portfolio and the performance of certain geographical sectors in 2015 I presume that many people are seeing 10% fund gains at the moment year-to-date. Assuming we're not going to be seeing a 30-40% gain this year (would be nice!) is now looking like a good time to sell? Understanding that drip feeding, fund…

Can a stocks and shares ISA produce an income?
I have a few grand saved up and I really want to take the first step into trying to make my money do something and I've been looking a bit online about a stocks and shares ISA. From what I've read you should typically be investing for 5+ years and I wanted to ask if a stocks and shares ISA has the ability to produce an…

Tax saving tip for pensioners
By deferring the purchase of the pensioner bonds to the new tax year You will save paying tax on the interest as the interest will then be credited in 2015/2016 tax year when no tax will be deducted at source. If the full amount of £40000 is invested this will result in a saving of £272 tax with a £75 loss of interest by…
