I asked in my local Santander Bank if interest earned in a current account would be considered as savings and be eligible for the allowance. To my surprise they did not know.

Tax relief on pensioner bonds
Now we can have the first £1000 of savings interest tax-free, will the tax rules on the Over 65's bonds be relaxed to pay gross, as even 4% on the maximum £10k would only pay £400 ? Or £10k in each, a max of £680.

BTL mortgage el-dorado?
still can't get bricks out of my head :D Do BTL mortgages provide (any) good tax incentives? In the past I preferred to save up and buy a flat to let out outright in cash... would it be better to keep a property let out under a mortgage? Any advice or better, example? Thank you

Premium Bonds.... Miss sold!
I just had a really bizarre telephone conversation about being miss sold Premium Bonds. Firstly I was informed I was speaking to the Department of Budget Spending Analysis. Clearly an Indian call centre. I was informed my premium bonds had been miss sold to me and I was due a refund. I then asked the lady to reconfirm who…

Help to Buy ISA - shared ownership situations
My daughter has recently purchased (in the last 2 months) a shared ownership flat in London, purchasing the minimum amount of shares allowed but with an option to purchase more as funds allow. Am I correct in assuming she has missed the boat on Help to Buy or would the scheme help her to save to purchase more shares?

Charges SIPPS and ISAs
Is your current stocks & shares ISA overcharging? The info in today's money saving email is wrong. Both ISAs (and SIPPS) can be invested either in funds (unit trusts) or stocks and shares ( which would include investment trusts ) . The charging structure for the two types of holding are different on all platforms. The…

Child Court Fund Account
Hi Our 3 children have money in a court fund account. The eldest is 18 in may and is a vulnerable youngster. We don't want him to blow all his money as it will be in his hands at 18. We want to put all 3 of the children's money into an ISA to receive a better interest rate. We have received a form from the court fund to…

S&S ISA, how is it going for you so far?
I'm just curious about people who've entered into an S&S ISA and wanted to ask if some of you wouldn't mind divulging your returns and how the experience has been for you so far. 1) When did you start your S&S ISA? 2) What did you invest in? (Don't have to answer if you don't want to) 3) How much do you invest per year? 4)…

Pound cost averaging with shares with the least cost
Hi I've inherited a fairly large sum that I'm considering investing into a variety of investments including shares, investment trusts, ETFs and OEICs. I've no debts or mortgage so I don't need to pay anything off. However, rather than investing large lumps in the various places I would rather drip feed the money (via a S&S…

Why bonds?
OK, sorry for what is probably a stupid question but what is the advantage of investing in bonds rather than, say, keeping it in cash. For example, what is the benefit of going for the Vantage LS 80 over putting 80% of my cash into LS100 and keeping the other 20 as cash?

Tax on foreign exchange?
i am soon to bring a sizeable amount of AUD savings into the country for a house purchase. This cash has been held in normal accounts in Australia, and subject to tax on the interest. My understanding is when i bring the cash over from Australia via a foreign exchange service, i won't be liable for any tax on it. However…

How often to rebalance?
If you have a nice balanced portfolio (by nice, I obviously mean "suits your own need") and to keep the nice balance you, at some point, will need to rebalance as some parts rise and others fall (or rise at different rates). I was wondering what the consensus is for the frequency of assesing your portfolio balance and the…

Newbie question re investment trusts
Hi, I'm thinking of dipping my toes in investment trusts but would like to know more regarding costs. I can see that most have ongoing charges and some have performance fees but can someone explain how you pay for them. Do they simply take their fees and take it as an expense from running the company and this in turn…
