Is there an alternative to Hargreaves lansdowne
I have a number of shares and unit trusts that sit outside an ISA. I have been too lazy to transfer them to an ISA but am aware of the tax advantages etc of doing so. I have a HL ISA account and was thinking of moving them into that and doing something called 'bed and breakfast'?. Anyway I have now become aware of some the…

Confusion over FSCS, offset mortgage plus savings
I think I understand what happens with the FSCS scheme when you have an offset mortgage partially offset with savings in normal circumstances, but am struggling to find an answer to my specific circumstances. I have a First Direct offset mortgage. I found an example where if you had a £250k mortgage and £100k savings, the…

Pros and cons of Hargreaves and Lansdown
With all these trading platforms around H&L seem to be a popular one, maybe only because of their marketing. I would just like to ask some questions any help will be greatly appreciated. What are peoples experiences of H&L? I hear they aren't so good for Investment Trusts, why is that? I am going to start of with HSBC 250…

Post Office Growth Bond maturity top-up warning
The PO is offering a 3.41% AER one-year deal to maturing one-year bond holders, which is fair enough. They are also offering a top-up facility, which may seem tempting with the recent increase in the FSCS limit. But beware that any top-up cash will be held in an account paying just 0.1% for several weeks before being added…

Cheques through the post.

bank has offered cash settlement for misadvice
I wonder if anyone can help me, my bank has sent me a letter saying that they feel they have not advised me, on my long term investments, to the best of their ability and are offering a one off payment if I sign a waver to claim in the future. The waver rings a few alarm bells, Im unsure how to act and would be very…

best long term savings options for children
Hi all, My children (age 2&3) have each inherited £5k that is to be invested until they are 18. I've tried to pay it into their existing child trust fund and Halifax savings accounts but have been told on both accounts that it is above the account limit (didn't know that there was one). Can any of you reccommend the best…

Fidelity FundsNetwork, can pay £45 to eliminate 0.25% switching fee
Fidelity FundsNetwork is introducing the option to pay a £45 a year annual fee instead of paying them 0.25% on switches and a possible initial charge of 0.5 to 2.5%. The option was previously only available to those with more than £50,000 there. The new one is open to anyone who buys via an IFA. To be ahead by paying the…

£300K to Save (Short Term)!
I will shortly have the proceeds of a house sale to find a home(s) for and will need fairly quick access to the funds to use for a future house purchase so I realise I'm pretty limited to instant access savings accounts. I'm looking for any recommendations as to where to put the money for a short while. Being a regular…

Stocks ISA minimum investment required
I am thinking of cashing in my endowment policy which has about 4 years to run to maturity and to invest it into a stocks ISA. If its split between my wife and I we should be within the allowance levels. We would then look to invest monthly into the ISA. We have been advised by a financial adviser that to get the best…

Paying into Santander - omitted Surname after reference!!
Hi, I made a payment from my Natwest account into my Santander Savings account today. I inputted 09-00-00 and 00050005, and put my account name (Rxxxxxxxx) as the Reference. I forgot that it actually should be (RxxxxxxxxSUR) - "SUR" being the first 3 characters of my surname. Does it matter? I will call Santander later…

Bank rate - What does this affect
The bank rate has been 0.5% for a long time now. This seems to have little effect on credit card and mortgage rates. Savings rates, although low, can be found at 4-5% if you try hard enough. My question is who benefits from the low bank rate and who would suffer or gain if it went up?

Savings account? Losings account more like!
With interest rates so low and inflation so high, isn't it inaccurate and misleading to describe an account as a "savings account"? If a lump sum deposited in such an account is actually losing its value as time goes on, due to an interest rate that is well below the rate of inflation, wouldn't it be more accurate to…
