Hi,

I'm looking to start "investing", I currently have my last years complete ISA allowance in the Halifax Direct ISA earning 3.2% & this years full allowance in my Santander ISA earning 3.35%. I'm looking to trasfer both of thes Cash ISA'S to the HL Vantage ISA.

These are not my only savings I have around £40,000 in different savings accounts. I plan to buy a flat in a few years time, and I'll be adding to this £40,000 over the years to put down as adeposit.

My reason for transferring is that rates are pretty crap, so my returns over 15+ years whilst investing should be greater. And I guess I might aswell start early as I'm young. My attitude to risk is pretty low, I don't mind risking most of the money.

I've had a look at the following funds to fit in my portfolio and in brackets my intended initial investment:

Aberdeen Emerging Market A Acc (£1000)
AXA Framlinton Biotech Acc (£500)
First State India Subcontinent A GBP Acc (£1000)
First State Latin America A GBP Acc (£1000)
Henderson Global Technology A Net AccHenderson Global Technology A Net Acc (£1000)
HSBC FTSE 100 Index Acc (£1000)
Invesco Perpetual High Income Acc (£1000)
JPM Natural Resources A Acc (£1000)
Jupiter Strategic Bond Acc (£500)
Standard Life Inv UK Smaller Companies Ret Acc (£1000)

I'm looking to construct a diverse porfolio. I'll be adding the full £5380 S&S allowance each year where I will conuct a review of my portfolio & make neccessary changes, and I will be saving £5380 into my Cash ISA also.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: The total only comes to £9000, so including interest I should have roughly another £1600 to put in.

  • Anyone got any opinons?
  • Try running your portfolio through the morningstar x ray portfolio tool and see what the asset allocation is like compared to a fund of fund like the jupiter growth fund that you will see if its well balanced.

I have the IP fund and the first state indian fund.

Try using trustnet as well clicking the rating tab to see how it rates against there peers

    Hi,

The allowance for a cash ISA is actually £5340, you can also put £5340 into a S&S ISA as well.
Alternatively you could put the whole £10680 into a S&S ISA.

Looks OK to me, I have more in UK and European stocks myself.
  • Could you recommend any other funds to me?

Funds are all about personal choice determined by your attitude to risk. My S&S Fund choice is currently:

    Baring German Growth
    Blackrock US opportunties
    MFM Slater Growth
    Marlborough UK Micro Cap Growth
Old Mutual UK Select Mid Cap.

My SIPP has a different 23 funds, far more diverse and include some shares too.

Take a look at Trustnet for some fund ideas and different investment sectors. Remember that Emerging Markets and Specialist can be more volatile. Fixed Interest and Bonds are generally safer and less riskier but provide more modest growth. I also invest monthly which is a better way to smooth out the high and lows.

I hold some of the funds you mention. I would personally avoid the FTSE 100 Tracker fund there but that is jsut me - I prefer to pay more for a professional to make active decisions - your choice.

An alternative for JPM Nat Res is Investec Enhanced Nat Res which seems to be less volatile and weather the downturns better (at least historically). For UK exposure you could look at Marlborough Special Situations. FS Greater China is another for that part of the world.

I manage quite actively and thought I would mention that I always plan where I would move funds to when I want to go defensive.....might be worth a think abotu that if you intend to do something other than "buy and hold"?

Franklin Biotech has performed marginally better than the AXA fund and has a lower TER, but according to HL the fund size is only 9m which I find surprising. So perhaps I am missing something.

I've been increasing my Aberdeen Emerging Markets holdings and decreasing some of the specialist areas after observing that the Aberdeen fund generally does better. Not in all periods so I'm not going anywhere near to eliminating using the others, but it's worth noticing.

One area I've been reducing is my direct Latin American holding size, while also increasing European smaller companies.
