The mystery of yeast
I've always wanted to make my own bread and to be honest the main thing that's put me off is using yeast. Probably sounds daft to all you regular bread makers :o but every time I read up on it I get more confused and just don't get it. I read about all different types ie fast acting, fresh, active dry, regular .... and so…

Cake tins question
I have a very fine looking Mary Berry recipe for a fruitcake with bits of pineapple in it. It says to make it in a 20 cm tin, and I only have a smaller one and don't want to buy a new one. If I make it in a slightly smaller tin do I need to increase or decrease the cooking time ? The recipe says 1 1/2 hours. Please can a…

Juice recipes, whats your favourite ? Any tips ?
Hi, We have just got a juicer because OH is determined to get healthier in 2015. Since he doesn't eat as much fruit and veg as me it seemed a good idea. I thought it would be a good way of using up any excess fruit and veg before it spoils as well as gaining more nutrients. What do's and don'ts tips do you have to share ?…

What bread flour do you use?
I've been baking my own bread for a while and I've always used Allinsons Strong White Flour and I had a huge stock of them earlier this year. I purchased 3KG of flour on offer at £1.50 at Tesco but on checkout the price was incorrectly set to 50p so I went back and grabbed the remaining stock of flour and got another 7…

How to clean a sheepksin coat
I bought a sheepskin coat from a charity shop. It's the woolly kind and brown in colour. (The missus liked it). The dry cleaners want £53 to clean it, which I am not going to pay of course... Anyone have any tips to freshen it up on the cheap?

Home made sweets
For Christmas this year rather than big tins of chocolates I thought I would have a go at making some home made sweets. I have had a practise and made some fudge using the recipe from the carnation web site. It turned out better than I expected. I also had a go at the tablet from MF in 3 site and again that was good. But…

How to stay warm cheaply?
I really need to stop putting the heating on so much, as I cant afford it all the time. I live in a terrace, but 1 house to the side of me is empty and the other side try to keep their heating off as much as possible, so no chance of much warmth there. I keep it off during the day (at work until about 3pm) but the house is…

Whiten/brighten white clothes
My OH has some really good quality long sleeve white undershirts, they have no holes or pulls and keep their shape brilliantly. They look dirty and grey/stained now despite Vanish/Oxy and various products in the washing machine. Is there an old school method of whitening or brightening them? Would soaking in bleach…

Are home made fish fingers easy?
I imagine that you just cut some fish up, then roll in egg and breadcrumbs and oven cook for 30mins. Are they really that easy? I have lots of white fish to use up and the youngest wants fish fingers. Any tips? Thanks :)

Beef pie help please.
I had some beef which looked a bit sinewy so chucked it in the SC. After many hours it is now nice and dark brown and yummy. It isn't enough to make into a stew to feed four, so I was thinking of making it into a pie. I really would love to make a plate pie as I have my late mum's enamel pie plate but I have never managed…

Two turkey joints in the oven
We had a lovely roast turkey breast joint for 6 of the family from Tesco last weekend. It was cook from frozen and went in the oven for 2h40mins at 160 degc (fan) as per the instructions and it came out perfect. We normally get a full turkey for christmas day to feed 12 but the turkey joint was that nice and simple that we…

Is this mould?
Hi, A little help please. I have no experience with mould etc. so don't know how to recognise it, let alone treating it. Any idea what is this, and how to treat/fix it? There is a black patch right at the corner, and the black fungus like thing seem to have spread on the wall as well as behind the wooden skirting on the…

How much will Christmas have cost you?
We just have presents to buy as we are spending Christmas day with my in-laws so I don't have to buy in any special food. We have all the decorations we need, so all we needed to spend this year has been for presents for 7 children and 12 adults plus tins of biscuits for neighbours, cards and wrapping. I added the total…

Out of Date Eggs
I know you have to be careful using out of date eggs but nobody in our household is in a vulnerable category and I have cracked and the eggs still smell ok. Dated 24/11/2014 should I use them in my muffins or not?

Help! I curdled my soup!
As the title says I managed to curdle a pot of chicken and sweetcorn chowder. I imagine it is because I added a glass of milk early and then tried to cook it in the pressure cooker to speed things up. Now it literally looks as if someone has been sick in the pot! Can I rescue it? Pick out the chicken and chuck the…
