quick question - 5 a day fruit & veg, do dried apricots count?
I'm trying to hit the target of 5 portions per day. I know that the portion for fresh fruit and veg is an amount roughly the size of your fist and there are a few less obvious portions like tinned tomato soup and just one glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. I'll often put either a tablespooon of chopped prunes and…

Cake making for money
Not sure if this should go here, but I figured people who bake cakes would be more likely to be in the OS section than anywhere else. I'm fairly good at cooking, and I make homemade cakes quite often. I know some people make money doing this, so I have a few questions - Do you have to do specialy decorated cakes to do it,…

Save on washing laundry
Here are some tips I recently picked up: Brightener: Add lemon juice to the wash water Whitener: Restore the colour to small items of yellowed linen by soaking in sour milk, then washing as usual. Booster: Make whites whiter by soaking them in a mixture of one cup vinegar to 4 litres of warm water then wash as usual.…

Cooking pastry
I'm making some individual tarts for tomorrow night, with caremelised onions, sun blush tomatoes and goat's cheese. Would it help…

Whole chicken or chicken fillets?
I usually use chicken fillets because me and OH are both a bit squeamish when it comes to handling a whole chicken (pathetic I know! :o ). Also we both like breast meat rather than leg meat and neither of us enjoys eating it off the bone (greasy messy yukky!) But after reading a few posts from MSers with a budget as tight…

Aspic, Brawn .... and jelly things
OK I have the pig's head and I've marinated in a beer/brine solution. Have also simmered it in a water, spice & herb mixture with onion. I'm just stripping the meat from the head, but I'm not sure that the stock will set to jelly. I have a packet of leaf gelatine ... the instructions for "aspic" simply tell me to soak a…
