OK, so what veggies are being cooked up for Christmas lunch this year? We're having roasties, roast butternut squash, broccoli, roast carrots, and sprouts (well I'm not eating sprouts - yuk!!!)

A question for Veggies?
A question to Ruthyjo/Trow? This is a spin off question from the £35 a week thread. A lot of my inlaws (now outlaws) are Vegan, the local ones sold their house a bit quicker than planned and asked to move in for a "few weeks" this turned into 18 months:mad:. Anyway, they spent a fortune on food, much more than we did (both…

Don't forget to defrost that bargain Lidl Goose or Turkey
Hi, Everyone who bought a frozen Goose or Turkey should now have it gently defrosting. Leave the plastic packing on until it's fully defrosted, then remove it and DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE GIBLETS, which are in the cavity. When it's defrosted it'll benefit from drying in the air - but needs to be kept cool - so the bottom…

New Years O/S family traditions?
This dates back to my O/H grandma and we have done this for many years. The first person who enters the house after midnight on new years eve/day must have dark hair and be carrying a piece of coal. Its supposed to bring you good luck for the coming year! Does anyone else do this type of thing or is it just us that are…

Mozarella - freezing?
Have been to Aldi today and bought some bread mix - (rosemary focaccia, and sundried tomato and parmesan) I thought I'd use some of it for pizza bases. So I bought some mozarella to go on top of the pizzas but I have never bought it before. It is in a packet and feels like it is in brine or water. The question is - can I…

Baileys cheesecake
I'm going to make the Baileys cheesecake that is posted on the recipe thread for boxing day. At the bottom of the basic cheesecake it says that it freezes really well, is that still the case if you go for the baileys option? and do you need to add the coffee? I'm hoping to start getting organised sometime soon, but i'm not…

Slightly blocked plug-hole - Advice?
My bathroom sink plug is emptying the sink really, really slowly. I wondered if anyone has some old-style advice about clearing it? It's no use using anything liquidy coz it just drains away (albeit slowly) before it can do any good. I'll pick up a sink unblocker from Tesco if needed, but thought i'd check with you guys…

OS Essential Housekeeping Kit
A couple of days ago I was browsing through a magazine and saw a lovely old-fashioned metal housekeeper's bucket filled with 'essential products' for keeping the modern house clean 'just like grandma'. Trouble is, everything they'd put in the bucket was modern off-the-shelf stuff  It got me thinking. What would…

Budgeting for a family of five - how much the basics?
I have found some of the recent posts on menu planning/budgetting very helpful - thank you. I am a mum of three with an OH to cook for - plus once or twice a week a couple of other adults for lunch/supper. Before I started budgetting I spent around £100 a week on food. I aimed to cut it down to £75 which I did relatively…

Fruit Crumble??
I need to make a fruit crumble for Boxing Day. Ideally I would make it now and store it but which is the best way?? I was thinking maybe stew the fruit and freeze it in the dish it will be cooked in. Making the crumble topping and freezing that seperately in a bag. Then on xmas evening I can take both out of the freezer to…

guinea fowl stock?
I've just had delivered 2 fully boned guinea fowl for Boxing Day and my lovely butcher has given me the carcass/all bones/wings separately. I'd like to make a simple stock, but not sure the simplest way to make it. I've also had a slow cooker delivered today ( a bargain at £6.49 using a discount voucher found on MSE!), and…

What can I do with green pepper?
Is there a good way to cook them that will disguise the taste or not make them taste so bitter? Whenever I buy them I end up throwing them away which I hate doing as I don't ever want to waste any food but I am determined not to do that today and need some ideas so I can use it in cooking tonight. Need to do it tonight as…

Put the colour back into velvet?
I've just bought my daughter a show jacket from e-bay (for horse riding). It's navy blue with a velvet collar and the colour has worn out of the velvet collar. Has anyone any idea how to get the blue back in it? It's dry clean only so can't use a wash in dye. Thanks :)

Pricebooks
Does anyone out there have any experience of keeping a pricebook as discussed in The Tightwad Gazette? Its a notebook in which you record the prices of items in different shops so that you can keep track of the cheapest source of a particular item.It seems popular on US thrift sites but I wondered if it was workable in the…

help with breadmaker recipe
I used to own a breadmaker which broke about 2years ago. I recently bought a new one but I am not very impressed with the wholemeal recipe included. My old maker used dried milk in the recipe and it made delicious bread. This one uses water, vegetable oil, salt, flour, sugar, dried yeast. Does anyone have a breadmaker…
