Hi,
Everyone who bought a frozen Goose or Turkey should now have it gently defrosting.
Leave the plastic packing on until it's fully defrosted, then remove it and DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE GIBLETS, which are in the cavity.
When it's defrosted it'll benefit from drying in the air - but needs to be kept cool - so the bottom of the fridge is ok if you've no-where else cool. (Away from any pet..... long story!)
If you have forgotten and need to defrost at the last minute - immerse bird in COLD water - change every so often, removing giblets as soon as possible. When fully defrosted, dry with paper towels. This can be done in a few hours, depending on size of bird.
Merry Christmas everyone - and good eating.

Good points there.
Does anybody know of a site that lists defrosting times? You know, like cooking times at so many minutes per pound only this would be for defrosting in a fridge, or a cool place perhaps...?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Can't find a site with a good guide - but defrosting slowly in a cool place always works best.
One very important point is that the juices that are released when raw meat is thrawing are potentially very unhealthy - so make sure there is no contact with other food, and wash hands after handling the meat.
I've just unwrapped my defrosted Lidl goose, and I'm really surprised at how good it's looking. I'm now drying it off for 24 hours - giblets are in the fridge, ready to make the stock for the gravy - can't wait!0 -

Thanks PP.
I might just quote the most relevant section of that later because not all their pages seem to stay available long term.gov_healthy_eating wrote:How long to defrost
To work out the defrosting time for your turkey, check the packaging. If there aren't any defrosting instructions, use the following times (or our Turkey defrosting calculator) as a rough guide for how long it will take to thaw your turkey, but remember to check that it's fully thawed before cooking.- In a fridge at 4ºC (39ºF), allow about 10 to 12 hours per kg, but remember not all fridges will be this temperature.
- In a cool room (below 17.5ºC, 60ºF) allow approximately 3 to 4 hours per kg, longer if the room is particularly cold.
- At room temperature (about 20ºC, 68ºF) allow approximately 2 hours per kg.
There is a calculator on the page which can help you work things out.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
