Shops' best kept secrets
I was just wondering what specific products people buy which are so cheap that they really shouldn't be any good, but are in fact preferable to more expensive equivalent products. For example, where a supermarket's value-brand version of a product is tastier/more effective than the same store's non-value equivalent. I'll…

Microwave rice steamer
I was clearing out the kitchen at the weekend (because I am having a NEW one fitted next week!!!!!!) and in the furthestmost darkest recess I found a plastic microwave rice steamer - a basin like bowl with another bowl inside it with like mesh in the bottom and a lid. Lord knows when I bought that but I seem to recall it…

Chocolate cake tips and recipes please! (merged)
Hi everyone, It's my sister's 18th next week and I really want to bake her a chocolate cake. I used to do a little bit of baking years ago, but I've tried to bake a couple of simple cakes this past week as practice but they haven't come out very well. First I tried to make a cake the other day and I think there was a bit…

How do you prune grapevines ?
Not sure if this is the right forum (or even the right site) but you've never let me down before so here goes. I've got this grapevine in my greenhouse and every year I follow the instructions and prune this, and then that and the outcome is always the same.....b*gg*r*all on the edible front, that's not counting the bits…

Tiny budget for next 2 wks - HELP!
Well, I was on the boards at the end of last week, knowing that I hadn't done a meal plan for the last 3-4 weeks and that I have 'splurged' on a few items, as well as pay some upfront one-off costs, but generally thought I was OK. Oh dear, how wrong one can be :( I now have £20 to see me through til the end of the month,…

Suggestion for MS Old Style ...
... could we have a "sub" forum? Seems there are two clear needs and expectations from the many user's of Old Style. On the one hand, factual, information is required and it must seem wearisome for those who prefer those to be put off by happy chatty diversions. On the other, "chattier" threads could perhaps be…

A little bit Hyacinth
I didn't know where to post this thread, so the board guide may think it needs moving. We can all think of someone who has Hyacinth Bucket tendencies, can't we? Make a neat job of painting your house number on your dustbin(s) by using a stencil (outline the numbers/letters with a black felt pen) and fill in with…

Mother gave me three a couple of weeks ago, about 3" high now about 18". When should they go outside? Should I re-pot, pots are about 8" diameter. Other questions. Thinking about carrots in a patio pot, good idea? Too late? Ditto cucumbers, radishes, lettuce etc We tend to have a lot of salad stuff for lunch, put together…

Controversial!
Now, I know this has nothing to do with money saving per se, but it has lot to do with Old Style Forums. Is it me - or is it getting a bit scratchy and irritable in here? I only ask, as I have been offline for a week, and I come back, and there seems to be a lot of disagreement, posts getting locked, threads coming off…

Weighing out Golden Syrup / Treacle (merged)
How do you weigh this out when a recipe asks for 2oz Golden Syrup? I put a sandwich bag inside my scale bowl and spoon the syrup into it and then cut a corner off the bag and squeeze it out like an icing bag. Just wondered if anyone had any other ideas?

easy eggs
I always make my scrambled eggs in the microwave - because it's easier and less cleaning. If making egg mayo sandwiches - I scramble the eggs first and let them go cold(a minute or so)before adding mayo. I find this easier than hardboiling/shelling/mashing plus appearance wise it remains predominately yellow rather than…

Getting wholefoods at cost price or near
I am a member of a wholefood co-op. We get together twice a year to place orders with suma (www.suma.co.uk) which we pay at cost plus 1.5% to pay for admin fees (there is always something to post, paper to buy, stamps required etc). It might be worth seeing if there is anything like that locally, alternatively why don't…
