My mum bought me a paper shredder last week and i now have tons of shredded paper but cant think what to do with it? We have no small animals so no use for bedding. I'd looked at the forum often in the past but didn't feel the need to join in until I had a tax query, the advice given was was my first saving, I can't put a figure on it yet until the returns for this year go in but I'd much rather have it than give it away. The other gems I have picked up include cutting the cleansing…

A few have come up in threads recently and I wondered which old adages you were brought up that still ring inside your head and remind you of thrifty ways to behave For example:* Waste not, want not * You can't make a silk purse out a sow's ear * Neither a borrower nor a lender be * Take care of the pennies and the pounds…

Vinegar rinse for the dog!
My poor little dog, he started choking with the fumes from the vinegar! I read somewhere that it made a lovely rinse for a dog but didn't say how much so I used half and half. Obviously far too much, my eyes are smarting too. I rinsed him thoroughly with the shower but the bathroom still stinks. Does anyone know what the…

Food safety - cooking meat in slow cooker
I'm going to be using my new slow cooker for the first time later this week and as I have lots of sausages in the freezer I thought I'd try Smiley_Mum's sausage and bean casserole. The recipe says to fry the sausages for five minutes to brown them before putting them in the crockpot. If I was to make the casserole on a…

Chickens
I read in a new kitchen garden magazine recently that keeping chickens is becoming quite chic, even in towns. But many people go for pedigree chickens that look fancy or have pretty coloured eggs. For money savers old style, chickens would probably be an added boon to resources, after all they lay every day in the summer…

Old-Style Interior Design
I was browsing through a few books on 'shabby chic' interior design recently and loved many of the ideas. However, they were all far too expensive for me! One idea particularly caught my eye - beautiful, mis-matched but elegant china pots in the bathroom cabinet for all of those bits & bobs that usually live in scruffy…
