How Many Potatoes for Shepherds Pie?

I'm using a recipe from here that just says use Mash.

There will be 3/4 servings for the pie.

Roughly 1 large potato per serving or 3 medium ones plus 1 for luck.

If you do too many you will just have a nice deep topping.:j

That's like asking how long is a piece of string

Depends on the pie dish and the size of your potatoes. If you're not serving any whole potatoes with it on the side then I'd suggest two fist size ones per person. If you're serving whole potato too - just use the amount you'd normally make but set some aside for the pie.

If you imagine that the pie bit is the meat & veg for a normal serving, then you need enough pots for a serving of mash per person.

Whenever I cook spuds I always make a pan full anyway and use the leftovers another day

I used left over mash last time so just piled it on.

I just wanted the bare minimum on there. It smells yummy.
