Our Old Style description
Hello everyone. It has recently been pointed out that our description in the forums listing, with its reference to WW2 etc, doesn't really help to attract younger readers on low budgets, such as students, into Old Style. The current description is this:- So we've come up with some possible alternatives with MSE Martin's…

How Do You Keep a Record?
I've been trying to balance my grocery budget over the last few months to find out what I am spending the most on but it's getting harder and harder. In the days when I used the supermarket for most of my shopping I could keep my till receipts to look back on but now I'm using local small shops, farmers markets etc it's…

storing fruit
What do you find the best way to keep the fruit from buying to eating! Is an open metal basket better than the old large dish? If if goes into the fridge it can get forgotton about, So far better out and eaten BUT I had two mandarins turn mouldy and they were bought this week! I dont buy alot at a time either (never bogof…

A thing to do with those charity collection bags that don't get collected
Blimey, my heading will be longer than my post, but I thought I'd just mention that those bin-bag sized plastic bags that they never seem to collect if there is nothing put out in them, make great dress/suit/jacket covers for storage! I always put them back on the doorstep but they rarely get collected if empty. So if the…

Recipe experts needed......
Just wondered if any of the many foodies out there could recommend a recipe using either a tin of salmon, tuna, sardines or kippers ( bought these in a moment of madness). For example I would love to make a quick and easy salmon fish pie for tea this evening, but have no recipe. I have 3 tins of salmon in my cupboard at…

"Treats" we can't enjoy anymore
I've just posted on the May Grocery Challenge thread about how Mr Thrift and I struggled to finish one Chinese takeaway meal between us last weekend, when we used to happily eat one each, and we felt quite ill afterwards, although we did like it at the time. But it certainly wasn't worth the bloated feeling and the shakes…

Removing Rust Stains
Does anyone have a foolproof method for removing rust stains from cotton fabric? My favourite white shirt has a couple of rust stains (don't ask) and I would desperately like to wear it at the weekend, minus the rust! I know I could go and buy a Stain Devil removal thingy, but are there any alternatives? Cheers. Kate

Help about fresh eggs and the codes please.
Hi everyone Following on from a recent thread about eggs. I decided never to eat any but free range (hopefully will have my own hens soon!) So I just popped off to my local butchers and bought a dozen eggs. I asked if they were free range and he said yes. I paid £1.30 a dozen. I've just got home and found the code on them…

HELP!! Kitchen Help - cooking without a kitchen (merged)
As some of you know, after my slug invasion I found out I had a major problem with damp in my kitchen! Now we have to have all the floating floor removed along with all the lower part of the kitchen cupboards etc and dehumidifiers put in to dry it all out. This is happening tomorrow which means no kitchen for 3-4 weeks!…

Getting to know you (split - new topic - Old Style on a Pension)
I know this is a little later than when you posted but I would love to hear what you cook and how you shop, doing a staples shop monthly seems a nightmare to me. I have tried cutting down but bad habits mean I never seem to get the shopping bill down much.

1950's theme
Next month I am having a party (a sort of birthday/very belated houswarming affair). I have decided that to make it a little more interesting, It should have a theme. A local night club is running a fifties night that evening, so I thought I would latch onto that. Basically, my guests will turn up in costume for…

A day in the life of an Old Styler ...
... (yes, I know that "chattier" threads are very much discouraged, but I hope sharing our particularly "old style" geared days may help some of our newer members. If it's inappropriate, do please move to a more "chattier"/relevant forum. Cheers :D ) In the past 24hrs I have achieved:-* my daily 20 min whip round * Spring…

Tofu Experiences?
Hello everyone, I'm sure there are discussions of tofu in here somewhere, and I am working my way through...please forgive me if I am overlapping on another thread. However, I have found mentions on here of tofu as a good meat substitute, and for me as a veggie, it's a really good source of protein, and yet I've never got…

Nutritionally good meals for the Freezer?
Hi Everyone I am looking for insprination for balanaced meals which I can make in advance & keep in the freezer for post-birth weeks. My daughter has just emailed me from Uni to say her shower is all mouldy. Now I know this is going to have something to do with vinegar, but advice about quantities etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

that whole loo roll thing
now i've been thinking (yes, THAT'S what the noise was :rotfl: ) about this false economy thing raging about economy loo roll (how its so thin, you need more, so end up spending more money) i cant help but thinking that all loo paper is a false economy (not only given what we use it for :p ;) ) but also the way in which we…

being organised
I think this is where the budget keeps falling down. I do okay for a few days, then it turns out there's no bread in the house so I can't make sandwiches for work, so I'm in the supermarket at lunchtime and - oops, there goes £10. Using coupons, cooking from scratch, taking your own snacks - it all requires an efficiency…
