External pipe leaking
One of the pipes on the outside of my house is dripping, but I don't know what the pipe is for. If it's part of central heating (boiler is in upstairs bedroom) or a pipe from the bathroom. Don't know whetehr to get a plumber or a handyman to sort it. It's the horizontal pipe in the picture. Any advice would be great.

Plastering, Doors and Skirting
Hi All! I have awful walls/celings upstairs in my property (plaster is >60 years old and was abused by the previous owner with wallpaper and very dark coloured paints). When we moved in we had to make the whole house liveable in under a week on a shoestring budget so we simply stripped the wallpaper and threw a few coats…

Best thermostatic bath shower mixer taps for low pressure - Bristan or Mira (magni-flo technology)?
I'm looking to get thermostatic bath shower mixer taps to replace a current one that's not thermostatic. We have low water pressure so not the best flow rate, but useable (gravity fed so cold water tank in loft and hot water in airing cupboard). I was looking at the Mira ones which have Mira Magni-flo technology…

Both involve removing of the existing water tank from the airing cupboard. The 0800 quote includes an ideal logic c30 boiler and two years warranty. I…

Neighbours adding extension (party wall): getting lots of letters: do we need to act?
Hi there, Our neighbours have applied for an extension. Pretty standard, adding a kitchen on the back, they've shown us the plans & measurements and we're fine with it. Now that they've officially applied, we've started getting letters saying things like: You are entitled to appoint a surveyor (fees paid by your…

Should the pump for the underfloor heating run constantly?
The pump for my underfloor heating runs constantly - it only has a live/neutral/earth lead, so when you give it power it just runs. Running a 60W pump 24/7 will consume a chunk of electricity, will reduce the life of it and just seems wasteful when the system only seems to need to call for heat ~2 hours/day in winter…

New driveway on a tight budget
I am needing to improve my driveway for some kerb appeal. I'm on a tight budget. Please see the photos... does anyone have any suggestions and figures I could work with? What kind of new driveway might fit under 1k (preferably far less!)? Anything we could do ourselves? There are 3 adults at home, so we could do some DIY.…

Permission for parabolic mirror on a telegraph pole
Does anyone know who you need to ask for permission to put up a convex/parabolic mirror on a telegraph pole (to assist in the safe exit of our driveway)? Is it just BT/Openreach or do you also need planning permission? The pole is directly opposite our drive, it would be ideal if we could use it. Are such requests…

Bathroom Ceiling - recurring damp problem - particle board
Currently living in a rental property until next summer when OH and I go to buy our first place together. Tis a lovely house and the landlord is a stand up guy, he's working very hard to help get the damp issues in one site of the house fixed. We've had trickle vents installed on every window in the house (at a time every…

Key cutting.....2nd time cut and still not working
Hi all, I have just changed locks to my flat and I needed to cut extra pair of keys. I went to Timpsons and thought that this would be a fairly simple process. First time I had them cut and they did not work. They go in but do not turn. I just went again to get them to re-cut, got back now tested and they do not work…

What to do with this!
Moved into a property 18 months ago and have been doing it up...... This is the last thing to tackle. It's a sunroom ceiling that is very dated in TnG pine varnished (though not shiny). Don't really want to go to the expense of tearing down the ceiling but would just like to paint it. Any suggestions on what to use? Thanks.

Getting a new slate roof in the North?
Hi there, I've been told the property I'm purchasing is likely to need a new roof pretty soon. It's currently original Welsh slate from the late 1800s, but the slate is crumbling from behind and there are quite a few gaps in the tiles showing light coming through. For example this image below: According to this website, a…

"upscaling" Ikea unit
I hate the phrase upscaling but refinishing isn't quite right in the context of dealing with Ikea goods....so.... I've got an old unit that we bought a number of years ago - might have been for the stereo or TV. Can't remember now. Anyways at some point we stopped needing it for the original purpose, had it around the…

Satin or Gloss?
The title is probably self explanatory…. About to start a DIY project in the next couple of weeks and I realise I’m probably going to get lots of differing opinions but I’ll ask anyway…… What’s the better option for painting the woodwork (skirtings, doors, frames, balustrades etc?). Gloss or Satin? I would always have said…
