What to do with this!

Options
Moved into a property 18 months ago and have been doing it up...... This is the last thing to tackle.

It's a sunroom ceiling that is very dated in TnG pine varnished (though not shiny). Don't really want to go to the expense of tearing down the ceiling but would just like to paint it. Any suggestions on what to use?

Thanks.

You'll need to give it a light sanding all over to remove any loose varnish, and to provide a "key".  Make sure you wash it down thoroughly to get rid of all traces of dust.  Once it's dry, you should then be able to paint over it with anything - bog-standard emulsion would probably be the simplest and cheapest option, but you can use whatever takes your fancy.

Paint over with Zinsser BIN to seal and provide a good key, no real need to sand it if using this but I would definitely give it a clean first with sugar soap. I'd then paint with some eggshell for a nice matt finish.
  • As above.  Zinsser BIN, no sanding required but be prepared for it to look so bad you will think you've made a mistake doing it - BIN makes things worse before they get better. Two coats of BIN and then your desired paint finish/colour.

Whenever I use BIN I use a foam roller as it's horrid stuff to use.
  • Thanks all for thge suggestions....I will check out Zinsser BIN! The wife says she would like a distressed whitewash/dragged/beach hut finish.....would  Zinsser enable this to be achieved?

Zinsser is a base, normally.  You'd paint over it with the colour of your choice.

If you want to see the grain of the wood, you'd have to sand it back and then use a stain or watered down paint.  It's very knotty though, they would probably bleed, which s why Zinsser is a good idea for it.

As mentioned, Zinnser is just your primer, you can achieve the finish you want with a suitable top coat. The problem you've got is the underlying wood which is varnished and therefore needs the primer to completely block it out. If you want a distressed, whitewashed look then you'll probably need to strip/sand all the varnish off.

I covered my DDs wooden ceiling with White Heavy Sparkle Cladding Wall Panels from Ebay and it looks great. Easy to do with special clips screwed onto the wooden ceiling.

I remember being very proud and pleased with my efforts in 1983 when I installed a similar T&G pine ceiling in out then kitchen.   :D

    How times and tastes change.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
