Structural engineers costs
Hi I am looking for some consumer advice. I engaged a structural engineer to carry out some work for me on my kitchen extension. Costs were agreed at £2500+VAT. The contract stated that the engineer would advise of any additional costs/work and would seek prior agreement before doing the work. Inevitably there were changes…

Moving sink/washing machine etc to other side of kitchen
Hello. My husband and I are going through our first home purchase. The kitchen of the property in question looks out over a grassed area to the road. Under the window looking out is the sink and where a washing machine/oven etc would go. Ideally I’d like a small breakfast bar on the window side so that you can sit and look…

New kitchen? What would you do?
I don't know if we should bite the bullet and get a new kitchen! We bought the flat 2 years ago and the kitchen was livable unlike all the other rooms so we left it. We will be here for at least another 3 years. We aren't bringing much money in as we are both on PhD stipends but we have a chunk saved as a big holiday in…

Issues with a fridge and a chest freezer,
The fridge used to be very good at cooling stuff and I had to put it max 4 any higher and stuff would freeze, noticed now even when at 6 (7 is max I think) things are cool but things like bottles of soft drink are room temperature within 30 minutes rather than 2 or 3 hours, I noticed one time that the top lifts off a…

Potential Asbestos?
I'm just about to rip out an en suite shower room. It looks quite old - primrose yellow sanitary ware and old fashioned tiling. The ceiling - which was once part of the bedroom - has a heavy swirly artex type pattern. The bedroom ceiling itself, has been papered over. Most of the other ceilings were also papered over and…

Woodworm
Refurbing the back room we have found some evidence of woodworm - not too bad and we have lifted a few floorboards and treated the worst areas with liquid splash on woodworm killer. However, there are a couple of other places in the room where there is the odd few woodworm holes (i.e 10-20 holes rather than loads) but to…

1920s front door style
Next choice in my grand plan - to change the draughty old front door. Much as I like the smart look of a solid painted door, I will be the first to admit that it makes the hallway very dark. The style of my home similar enough to this. What kind of door with windows would suit a 1920s property of this style?

Washing machine in the garage
I’m after ideas that might make it possible & safe to have a washing machine in a garage. it’sa new house (to me) so I don’t really know if the garage tends to freeze in winter or not. Its already got plumbing in there for a washing machine though I don’t think they actually used it for that. The space in the kitchen is…

Buying a property for the first time...taking the plunge and hoping to live there for a long time. At the moment it has a very small toilet and shower and separate utility room downstairs listed as laundry room on the image. The bathroom is the start of a kind of annex after the utility room from our kitchen (which also…

Fitted kitchen cost
Hi all. I’m looking to get quite a small galley kitchen ripped out and refitted with something new. Don’t need anything fancy, but even my budget which is about £4000 doesn’t seem to be cutting it. If anyone has any advice on this, please, I’d be very grateful. Thanks :)

Door Frame Draught Excluder
I'm in the process of stripping old gloss off the door frames which will be sanded and glossed over in prep for new internal doors being installed. Id like to remove the draft excluder for a better finish and replace like for like but I'm unable to find this type. Hoping someone is familiar with this type. Thanks
