House exterior wall painting-advice needed
Can anyone help with painting advice for a house exterior wall. It was done last year but is already looking very tatty. It is a south facing wall in an exposed area and it was done with Sandtex masonry paint directly painted onto the wall which I think is a rendered wall. When I brush my hand against the bare areas where…

Primer + 1 coat, or, 2 coats of emulsion?
I'm going to be painting a room. It has painted wallpaper on it at the moment, with a light colour on the lower half and apple green on the upper half. Condition is good. I want to paint it with a cream colour Dulux emulsion. Now, should I use a primer, then one coat of colour (saves money), or no primer and two coats of…

Am I being a bad customer (re-rendering building)
Hi all, so we took the jump to pay out quite a lot of money on getting our 1920s semi re-rendered, literally removing the old render and then re-rendering with a smooth render (also paint), I was initially worried by the company as they increase the quote my 10% due to not factoring in that it will need 3 coats instead of…

Prime before Gloss?
I've used a heat gun to remove old gloss from door skirting taking it back to the original wood. Does this need to be primed first or is it okay to apply gloss straight to it? Thanks

Change design after submitting plans
Kitchen extension. Originally wife wanted pitched roof with velux windows. Planning application went in one month ago. Now wife has decided that, after seeing neighbouring planned extensions and YouTube videos, that she wants a flat roof with sky lantern. Do we have to start all over again with our planning application?

Neighbour breaking the law ?
So we have public land in front of our house and too the side, with some nice youngish trees( 20 ft) grass is a slight hill/mound. we have noticed that somebody is heavy cutting certain trees, which makes them basically a stump. only the trees around 1 property have been cut in this way. We believe its 1 particular…

Planning Permission Question
Hi all, Firstly, apologies if this is the wrong section, I thought DIY might be the best place to put this as it's about planning permission but not exactly DIY... We bought a new build house on a development with management fees for green areas on the estate. I'm reviewing the original planning permission submitted by the…

Neighbour parking issue, and potential boundary issue
Just after some advice on if there is a way to proceed with this issue, and/or how to. At the end of our street, there are some parking spaces, originally allocated at 1 space per property at this end of the street. So there are 10 properties (2 semi-detached house + 8 flats), and 10 spaces. My space had a detached single…

"Supply and Fit" windows- should include labour, yes? (Humour me please)
This is a very strange question, but we've just had a final bill for some work and I need a sanity check before I go back and query it. We are very happy with the quality of the windows and quality of work, so no dispute there. However, the original quote said "supply and fit", whereas the invoice now has several hundred…

Bouncy Victorian ceiling ....
So I'm in my new house - built 1892 - and trying to get to know all it's various quirks and foibles etc, having come from a fairly sturdy 1960s built house. The main bedroom is huge - 5m x 3.9m roughly - and when I walk over it, the chandalier (Lovely old thing left from previous owners!) in the lounge below, jingles and…

Structural issues and brick spalling
The cement render on the back wall of my Victorian house is badly cracked and there's damp and cracks internally. I partially removed some render to find out if it was brick or stone (the front is stone and brick) and it's red brick which is badly spalled and the mortar is crumbling and gone in places. A renderer has just…

I'm trying to declutter some of DM's huge number of baking / cooking equipment and have come across a large Le Creuset casserole dish which she's had for over 30 years. The bottom is discoloured but the main problem is that some of the lining has come away, it looks like a burst blister. Is this still safe to use please?…

Land Registry Right to Light
I’ve been going round in circles with my local council over the last year regarding 5 lime trees that surround our property. As well as year round mess, the trees (throughout Summer and part of autumn) cast significant shade on our property - enough that during the day we have to have lights on inside. The council are…

Building Regs to convert a bedroom to a bathroom
I’m making an offer on a house where they’ve converted a bedroom to a bathroom and this has included forming a landing from part of the old bedroom to the new bathroom at the end, which has a chimney breast in it. Being of average build, I almost need to squeeze past to access this bedroom. Is it likely this would have…
