Howden's prices
I am getting new doors fitted internally but I am really struggling with deciding which ones to go for because I can't see the prices anywhere. So a door I am looking at could cost anywhere from £80 to £1000 and I wouldn't have got a clue. Where can I see the prices? Or even get an idea of a ballpark figure

Choosing a contractor
We’ve narrowed down the choice of contractors to build our extension, and are genuinely stuck between the two very different companies. Both have good reputations, decent local history and references. No major cost differences, first company slightly more expensive. They could both do the job. One is a medium size company,…

Water softener and drinking water filter
I'm living in the London area and would like to get a water softener for the house to help with limescale build up. However, I'd like a separate drinking water filtered tap at the kitchen sink that bypasses the water softener. I know nothing about what are reputable brands for these things and which ones should be avoided.…

woodworm indoor frame
I'm just trying to cope with a bit a woodworm in the doorframe of my basement bathroom. I've bought some Sikagard Universal 5 star Wood Treatment and how do I get it into the wood? I've been told I can use a syringe, can anyone recommend a syringe? Will this be strong enough to get through the wood?

What colour carpet?
In our lounge we have recently repainted to Dulux Polished Pebble on the walls, can't decide what colour carpets to put down. Our sofas are a denim blue and we have a couple of cream tub chairs. Furniture is mainly light oak. Does anybody have suggestions for what we could change the carpet to, the current beige doesn't go…

Wiring replacement oven hood
Hello, I need to replace my oven hood and have removed the old one and trying to figure out how the new one will be wired in, and whether I'll need an electrician. I had to cut the wire from the old one to get it off the wall (after isolating power at the breaker!). The old wire had been run in to a channel in the wall and…

Brown water stains suddenly appearing
Today I just noticed brown water stains on the ceiling below our shower. They've appeared very suddenly and the area is completely dry. We can't find any cause for leakage in the shower, but we've only lived in the house for 2.5 years so could they be old stains? What would cause them to suddenly appear? It's also worth…

Normal wear and tear or more serious?
I think covid has given me some weird anxiety about my house as I've started to see and worry about every last thing. Since last April we've had a lot of cracks appear. There are a couple that run vertically from the top of a door frame to the coving (one upstairs one down, roughly same area of the house), lots of cracks…

There's a moose loose in t'hoose.

Kitchen floor decision
We are planning a new kitchen as part of our extension. We had decided upon cashmere shaker cupboard doors and a light coloured worktop (not fully decided which yet). We went to a tiling store today and quite liked the following tile, but am slightly worried it may not go well with cashmere or may be too dark. Our new…

Costing help
I have looked at threads for costs of a stud wall but can’t see an up to date price for what we want so... Can anyone please advise the sort of figure I should be looking to pay to have a stud wall put up to split lounge and diner. Gap is only 8/9 foot. Putting in french doors (which we already have) plus plastering,…

What is causing this and how to fix it?
Its the plasterboard join between the wall and ceiling so presumably is some sort of tape, what is causing it and how can I fix it? Once it starts to crack and open up it continues to spread. The wall is wallpapered and the ceiling just painted. The colours have not come out right in the photo

Dry Verge on Roof
Hi all, The mortar on my roof verges has started crumbling and falling out. Had a roofer (who I have used before) out to have a look. Suggested they can clear out and re-mortar but have suggested going for a dry verge system for longevity as he feels the roof generally is in pretty good condition so not going to need…

Building in phases and signing off
Hello For some you saw me asking for opinion on drawings for extending the house. I thank those who gave positive and negative comments concerning the proposed extension. I have also noted that many times people do extend and forget or don’t get the works signed off on completion which later causes problems when…

This mold (?) appeared on my wall!!
This, what I think is, mold has appeared on my wall in the last couple of days. I rent a flat and I'm wondering if it's my issue to sort out or the landlord. Is it dangerous? Thanks! (Sorry that the picture isn't the best)
