Winter wonderland conservatory?
Hi, This is my first post on the website - I'm after some conservatory related advice! We're just planning what to do with our new one as we don't want it to sit there unused all winter. We're thinking of turning ours into a winter wonderland and wondered if anyone had ever done anything similar? If possible we'd like to…

2-bed apartment, no built in storage, removing en-suite
Hi All I was hoping I could pick the brains of someone with more knowledge and experience of such things. Essentially I have recently bought a 2-bedroom top floor apartment, which has no built-in storage and very little room to add it. Due it being top floor, the angled ceilings in the bedrooms remove some of the height,…

New carpet and low internal doors advice please
Hi we have just had new carpet fitted and unfortunately we were talked into the 'best quality' underlay. Some of our internal doors are now catching on the carpet. When is the best time to plane the doors? Do we wait for the carpet to settle or do we do it sooner rather than later? thanks sparkie

Hi All, We live in early 1900's semi detached house and radiators in our house are quite old so if I want turn on/off radiators I have to use spanners which is painful if I have to do this couple of times a day and specially for my parents if I'm not around. Are there any radiator valve caps which can fit on this and allow…

Anyone own a New Cottager stove from Bernard Davis?
Hi, Do you own a 'New Cottager' stove as supplied by Bernard Davis &Co., East Sussex? I have purchased one of these stoves second-hand but it has come without any paperwork. I am struggling to find a HETAS approved installer to fit it as they apparently need a copy of the 'Manufacturers Guidelines' etc. Would you have a…

Can the water authority hold me liable because a builder we had working for us, damaged a sewage pipe, that the water authority was responsible for and later repaired. Or should they instead hold the builder liable and try to retrieve theirs cost from him or his insurance. Thanks

Replacing a large radiator with a smaller one
We're looking at replacing a large radiator with a much smaller one. The large radiator runs almost the length of the wall (less some units on one side). We're wanting to free up the wall space so that the fridge freezer can be against the wall where the radiator currently is. I suppose the simple question is... can the…

New flat roof - EPDM or fibreglass?
I've got a small flat roof, approximately 4m x 2m, on my kitchen/bathroom extension which is two storeys high, which needs replacing. It's been there since before I bought it in 1997. Which would you prefer and why? And what kind of price would you estimate, assuming there will be scaffolding costs?

Home Electricity gone! will the electric board engineer be free? + generator hiring ?
If a house electricity is fully gone, and the meter outside shows nothing on the reading, and no fuse has been tripped, it could be an external problem, for them to look into. If the Eon or southern electric engineers are called out for this, do they usually charge, to come and look and fix the problem (if they find it) ?…

My Conservatory Is Unusable!
Hi All, Really need your advice. I've got a bee in my bonnet with my conservatory, it's driving me mad. It's relatively new (less than 10 years old) and it came with the house when we bought it 4 years ago. It is a south facing room which renders it completely unusable due to the incredible heat and glare. It gets so hot…

Bricked up fire place
I have recently bought a 1930s semi with closed off fireplaces. The Husband and I optimistically thought that we could take off the plasterboard and open one up ourselves, however we have found it to be completely bricked up, right to the back of the fireplace. There is also a old pipe coming down the chimney, but we can't…
