Radiator valve caps or new thermostatic radiator valve?

Hi All,

We live in early 1900's semi detached house and radiators in our house are quite old so if I want turn on/off radiators I have to use spanners which is painful if I have to do this couple of times a day and specially for my parents if I'm not around.

Are there any radiator valve caps which can fit on this and allow me to easily turn the radiator on or off?

Other option is to replace these old valves with the new thermostatic radiator valves but I guess that will be an expensive option. Around £10-15 for TRV and plumber/handyman's labor, not sure how much but I guess it will be £100ish, and I have 4 radiators which needs to be fixed so total cost roughly around £200. :(

Can someone please advice me what will be the cost effective option?

Thank you/

Just go for the TRV's. They're so much easier to turn than the traditional lockshield valves, plus they'll save you moolah in the long run in rooms that you don't need to heat up so much. Replacement caps will probably be cheaper, but will still be tough to turn.

Your costings seem high. Get a quote from a decent plumber for a heating service and replacing the valves for TRV's.

Remember you do not need to, nor should you, fit a TRV to the radiator in the room where the thermostat is located.
