Lounge/dining room or 3rd bedroom/Dining room
We have just moved into a 2/3 bed dormer bungalow with one bedroom upstairs, one downstairs and the 3rd room with the door off the lounge and used as a dining room. We were hoping to knock through to make a large living/diner room but this means there is no way it can be classed as a 2/3 bed house, but it will have a great…

boiler fault - almost 5 years after installing new - who is at fault
Hi there, I live in a fairly large 5+ bedroom property at the moment. It is a new build about 12 years old. The plumbing system messed up (don't ask me what exactly) but the plumber replaced the 2 boilers (which were about 7 years old at the time) with two brand new gloworm boilers. This was 5 years ago. So 5 years later…

Vinyl flooring and floor trims?
We've been ripping up a lot of laminate in our house as we're refurbishing it from the previous owners, however there are a couple of rooms where we want to look at getting vinyl flooring down instead of carpet. I'm talking about the thick vinyl that slots together in a tongue/groove style, not the stuff that comes on…

Home Improvements on Help to Buy homes...
Hi guys, Apologies if this is a duplication, can't seem to find any discussion or explanation on the matter anywhere...! Basically, we bought our home using the Help to Buy scheme 18 months ago, and still have the 20% loan outstanding - no worries. I'm in line for a job promotion and was looking into having a conservatory…

Independent survey of cracked wall - who and cost?
Hi We have some cracked bricks (zig-zag through the mortar, not through the bricks themselves) in a couple of areas of our house - one by the door and another round the side near the corner. We're an end terrace house. Is this the sort of thing that is wise to get a surveyor to look at first of all to diagnose the problem…

Insulation - Best buy/type
I want to roll out some insulation over the top of our old which is very thin, about 2 inches. It's an old Victorian 2 bed semi so just the eaves need going over as the centre is boarded over with things being stored. If anyone can tell me a good offer, even free as well as the best width I will be very grateful. Not sure…

Perspex / acrylic sheets to make display casing
Anyone have any advice/guidance tips please? Ideally I was looking for a ready made display case for a school project to display a large Airfix model ship my son has constructed. If it's taken to school as it stands, we all know what prodding and poking by classmates is going to result in and I don't particularly want to…

Vacuum cleaner for hardwood floors + carpets?
Hi. Can anyone recommend a good vacuum cleaner that will do both wood and laminate wood floors + rugs and carpets. They do exists right? Or is it better to get 2 separate ones? Just need the power on button to be somewhere near the top of the appliance (hand activated) rather than at the bottom (usually done by foot) - due…

Burglar Alarm Costs
I bought my flat in London 2004 and it came with a monitored burglar alarm service which I took over. Control panel, sensors in each room, etc. It cost me about £300 per year back then which included an annual service and monitoring. This was provided by the same company that installed the alarm in the first place. Long…

Knots in wood
I wonder if I can ask for your help? I am trying to paint the woodwork on my landing and there are knot marks in the gloss paint showing through. Without having to strip back to the bare wood, would Zinsser BIN work? I am covering the sanded gloss with a white satinwood. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Conservatory Roof Replacement
We have a 9 x 14 Edwardian Conservatory, approximately 15 years old. Same old story... cold in winter and boiling in summer. We would like to investigate replacing the polycarbonate roof with something more insulated. We've contacted a few companies, and some say we need building regs, some not... Any other pitfalls,…

water butt size required.
Hi I'm going to collect rainwater from my shed roof for watering plants and also to protect the shed walls from water damage. Total coverage of shed roof is approximately 8m(square). How much rain would I be able to collect from there and what's a reasonable water butt size for this. We do quite a bit of gardening so I am…

Rattling boiler cover - need quick fix
I had a combi boiler fitted into a cupboard in the bedroom as there was nowhere else for it to go. It's only about three years old, however when it fires up, the cover rattles and wakes me up. I'd like to fit some kind of strap around it to hold the cover tight to stop it vibrating but not sure what to use, it would need…

Gorenje (kitchen appliances) - anybody used their stuff?
I'm in the process of buying a new kitchen, and have found the Gorenje range - I'd never heard of them, but the prices seem good, with decent features and design. As far as I can tell they've been a manufacturer for other brands for a while but are fairly new to the consumer market themselves. Has anyone used them? What do…
