What material would be best for alcove shelving
The alcoves are 92cm wide. I want 3 shelves of roughly 20cm deep for books One about 30cm deep then a wide one about 40 cm deep to use as a sort of desk I've looked on the b&q website. There is redwood planks. White wood planks. Furniture board which is a bit pricey or would I be better using mdf? Or is there something…

Removing old tile adhesive residue from external step.
As the title says, our external step was tiled and they were coming loose so we removed them. The thing is it has left loads of lumps of what I can only imagine the adhesive used for the old tiles. I've tried chipping away at it with a chisel but there are quite a few bits that just won't budge. Can anyone recommend…

Hi guys, i've had a Mira Sport electric shower for 6 years which has stopped working and now want to replace it with a Mira Sprint shower. Stopping stairs squeaking
Just took the carpet off the stairs with intentions of painting them, but before I do a lot of the treads squeak. Is it best to nail them back down or screw them? Either way where are the stair treads attached to something solid to actually nail into? If nails then can you recommend which type of nail is best for this many…

Anyone got an external boiler?
Has anybody on here got an external boiler? We've had ours fitted for 3 years now, but have just noticed that where it enters our house (big metal tube with lots of smallers pipes coming out of it) seems to be condensating up. So much that in the morning the front door is covered in condensation. This has never happened…

(London) Victorian/Period Solid Wood Front Door
Does anyone know of a good company who could provide me with a quote for a pretty bog standard 6 panel solid softwood front door? The property is an early Victorian affair in a Georgian regency style. I assume softwood is slightly cheaper and I'd like to paint or have it painted. It's important to me that it should look…

Thermostat on central heating
Hello we moved into a house earlier this year and noticed that unless the thermostat (at the top of the stairs) is turned up to at least 23-25 degrees the central heating doesn't click on. I therefore think it's broken as there's no way the temperature is that high. My question is, can i just replace the inside bit of the…

Door curtains/coverings
DH and I have sliding aluminium double glased doors in our dining room. There is no radiator in there and last winter we noticed (our first winter here) that it gets cold there. At the moment there are vertical blinds (See photo) there which are good for summer as let light in and mean that people can't see in properly…

Could this roof cause problems?
I am on the verge of buying a house and I have noticed the roof is unusual compared to other houses in the street. The roof is slightly raised on one half. Does anyone know why this would be the case? Could it cause problems with the roof in the future? Cosmetically it is not ideal but as long as it doesn't cause any…

skirting boards/cornie?
I'm currently mid-renovation and having ripped out the skirting boards to prepare for a DPC and removed the cornice (coving!) to remove the wallpaper fully underneath, I've been deliberating whether or not to replace them. I think the skirting board is still necessary because the original parquet floors are going to be…

Anyone else had issues with Next sofas?
We bought sofas from Next earlier this year. When they arrived they were much softer than we thought they would be, based on trying them a few times in the shop. My OH has back issues so this was something we were very focused on. The feather stuffing from the side cushions comes out daily and is a nuisance. Next sent…
