Thermostat on central heating

Hello
we moved into a house earlier this year and noticed that unless the thermostat (at the top of the stairs) is turned up to at least 23-25 degrees the central heating doesn't click on.
I therefore think it's broken as there's no way the temperature is that high.
My question is, can i just replace the inside bit of the unit (honeywell) or do i have to get someone special (aka expensive) in to replace it.
thanks in advance for your help

Have you measured the temperature at the thermostat? Obviously as heat rises, and it is upstairs, downstairs will always be much cooler.

Unusual to have a stat at the top of the stairs, as said heat rises.

Theres a few types of stat so you need to know exactly what you are getting, there are also wireless ones.

Easy to replace and cheap enough from Bodge it and Quick, I would suggest you extend the cabling and resite it at the bottom of your stairs in the hall way.

Its possible that its just a bad stat ie the temp it says isn't the actual temp it turns on and off at but is a few degrees different.

That said maybe you should try a thermometer in that location then try downstairs too.

They're usually easy to change - if you are happy replacing a light socket or power socket then you can replace a thermostat. Make sure you isolate power to the boiler though as our thermostat works off mains voltage!
  • stats can be as much as 6 degrees out from the actual temp & agree with some of the others it should be downstairs not up
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • I'd use a thermometer, and then a felt tip pen to write some new numbers on the thermostat (if it is indeed not correctly telling to the temperature).
