Anyone else had issues with Next sofas?

We bought sofas from Next earlier this year. When they arrived they were much softer than we thought they would be, based on trying them a few times in the shop. My OH has back issues so this was something we were very focused on.
The feather stuffing from the side cushions comes out daily and is a nuisance. Next sent someone out and they said they would change the fillings on the cushions but we heard no more so we wrote again. They sent someone else who said there was no manufacturing fault although they acknowledged that the cushions were too soft and the filling was coming out of the side cushions.
Next have just offered us replacement sofas but I think that their sofas must be inherently poor quality and I would like to get my money back and go for something of better quality. Perhaps £900 for a sofa isn't enough to pay to get a good one.
I'm fed up with it. We saved up for these sofas and took so long choosing what we thought was the right one and we feel that we've been had.

  • it never fails to amaze me why people buy stuff from the wrong shop, next is a clothes shop not a furniture shop, you wouldn't go to curry's & buy double glazing or to thomas cook & buy a wok, horses for courses buy in the right place & hopefully you won't have a prob or at least you can speak to someone that knows what there are talking about. (ok maybe not the last bit but you get my drift).

i wouldn't have thought that £900 is going to buy you the quality that you want . make sure that if the cushions are foam that it is a, firm enough and b , of good quality , which most of the cheaper end aren't

But Next does have some shops which focus on homeware including sofas. I haven't yet bought any but I am tempted by some of their tables/chairs/coffee tables etc.

Where would you reccomend buying sofas from? I'm not convinced you will get a lot more knowledge or better advice in dedicated furniture stores, most of the common stores just employ sales staff, there was a programme last year where someone , maybe Mary portas, highlighted advice in these shops, it was shockingly bad but to me it wasn't unexpected. But, if you could throw in some names of shops that provide better advice that would be most welcome

Sofas from Next are generally made by Westbridge (may vary depending on model but you could call them and ask whether they make the one you purchased).

A family member ordered two sofas from M&S recently and they were manufactured by Westbridge. Quality seems great but I wouldn't have expected any less given the price!

For £900 you should be taking a firm line with them in terms of your statutory rights. An item should last for a reasonable period. If you're having this issue within the first year it would suggest the item isn't up to scratch. More info on consumer rights in this article.

Come off it. The shop sold sofas, tables, chairs etc and was called Next Home. Just because they sell clothes too shouldn't mean they are incapable of selling something else.

What do you suggest is the threshold whereby you do not end up with rubbish?

So, any tips on where to actually buy sofas from?
  • I've just bought a reclining chair and sofa and did a bit of research beforehand. I bought from an independent furniture store (travelled 70 miles to it!). I got proper advice from people who know their furniture and who have a reputation to keep. I also negotiated down quite a bit on the original price.

My sofa was £1900, but probably a third of this cost was extra for leather and an electric recliner. So I don't think the OP's £900 is so cheap that he should accept stuffing coming out. £90 or £900, it should be fit for purpose. Try the CAB, they may have a standard letter to set out your legal rights and demand remedy.
