Question about expenses
I am employed and receive a monthly salary. I can claim 45p a mile for using my own car to go to meetings etc. I then receive these expenses in my pay the following month. Are these expenses taxable as it looks like it's been counted as taxable income on my pay slip. Many thanks in advance!

We've always used statements to do self assessment returns, but now getting a mortgage we require audited accounts which we don't have, is there anyway we can use mixture of receipts and bank statements to do a business account spreadsheet? Thanks

Self Assessment and the State Pension
HMRC tell us that you can get details needed to fill in a self-assessment return by asking The Pension Service "for a BR735 'Statement of Pension' form for the period 6 April 2015 to 5 April 2016." I've done this, and received a one-sheet reply: About your State Pension ____________________ Dear Mr Polymaff Please find…

I bought our current home (plus land) in 2010, in my sole name just before Mrs caronoel and I got married. Bought the house as mixed used property at the time, as it has about 10 acres of woodland attached. There was a stamp duty benefit in doing this. Current value of the property is approx. £2.5m, with an outstanding…

Council tax has gone down...?
I just noticed my council tax amount has gone down this year (same band though). Which is great! But am wondering if it's normal for it to drop? Esp when the property has increased in value and the area has become a little more popular? And, if this is based on the council re-evaluating the details of my property (a flat…

A Taxing question
I am considering retirement with a final salary pension. When I put the figures into an online calculator its says that to take a 25% lump sum as a commutation it will breach HMRC rules about taxation and that I will be liable for 40% tax on the amount over that level. My question is if I retired at the start of the tax…

Got a UTR - what really happens next?
I have received a letter from HMRC stating they "have set up a Self Assessment record" me, mentioning my UTR. I did not contact them for an SA so it must be the second reason ('circumstances mean you need to complete a return'). The 2 changes in my circumstances from previous years: - savings interest expected of 3000,…

I hope someone can help me to work out if I need to do something or if I'm committing some sort of tax fraud! I'm working away from home as a contractor, and claiming the cost of train travel through my umbrella company. The costs are therefore offset against tax, and all this is above board. However, I've had some bad…
