Council Tax Demand - Account in Dispute
Hi guys. I was wondering whether anyone knew what the position is where an account is in dispute (appeal to LVT having been referred back to collecting council for failing to deal with my initial complaint), and a demand for payment made. I have the usual threat of summons if non-payment within 10 days etc. Can I legally…

BR Tax Code
I'm working through a recruitment agency and just found out that I'm on tax code BR (I opened a letter from the tax people) where I'm paying tax at 20% on my weekly pay. I have my P60 and final payslip from my old job, P60 says 'final tax code' is 647LM1 and the payslip says 747L. What do I need to do? :A

Can I appeal my Council Tax Band if Everyone is Paying the in the Same Tax Band ?
We are buying a bungalow from someone but the buildings originallly were sold by a housing association. The whole development of 20 bungalows is rated in Band C even though we only paid £93,000 for it and one is up for sale at £68,000 ! Originally I think maybe they were rated along with the houses in the street which are…

Contracting and travel expenses.
I am self employed in media work from home but I also contract myself out 3 days a week at a horticultural nursery as another string of income. Week1/Month1 codes - getting off this
My last employer used a week1/month1 code for my P45. My last payment was a large payment for PILON and I've paid too much tax. I'm now a company director running my own payroll and was hoping to invoke a refund from HMRC. however, my accountant says I cant because my last employer used a week1/month1 code on my P45. Any…

Living and Working Abroad
Hi, I moved to the UAE in May 2009 after working in the UK for close to 5 years. I was home a few weeks back and found a letter from HRMC which had tax charges for 2009 and 2010 of close to 500 in total. I did not complete a p85 when I left the UK. I am still in Dubai on a permanent contract and have returned to the UK…

Hi Everybody, I know somebody will be able to answer this question without having to think about it. I work from home and use a small room for an office and also 85% of my garage as a workshop. Over the past few years I have never claimed for using this space i.e., water rates, insurance, maintenance, mortgage interest…

HMRC late filing penalty - can it be avoided ?
One of my friends has a limited company, which is dormant and has been so since he created it. As a consequence he has never received any income from it. He has received a late filing penalty from the HMRC. He seems to think that it he removes (i.e. strikes out) the company from the companies register, the HMRC will not…

Moving out after council tax summons
Must admit I was somewhat unsure where to post this exactly, but hopefully someone can help with my issue! A couple of months ago I received a council tax summons for the first two months of rent for a flat. I was under the impression a direct debit had been set up and indeed had the active direct debit in my HSBC online…

Council Tax Exemptions - Class C & A
This is a little complicated so I apologise in advance. I completed / bought my house back on the 2nd Nov 2010. The house was in need of extensive renovation so I immediately applied for a Class C (Vacant and Unfurnished Dwelling) 100% exemption. The local council granted one but only up until 9th Jan 2011 as the previous…

Small amount of extra cash...
Please can you guys help. My hubby is a landscape gardener on £23k per year. He is doing a few small jobs on Sundays and will make approx £2400 extra per year. How does this work with tax-I read that you lump it together and that still wouldn't be over the threshold for 40% so it is taxed at 20%? If so, would we need to…

Council Tax - Garage included?
Apologies in advance, for what appears to be a relatively simple question. I unsuccessfully appealed my Banding. When the VOA gave their response they referenced a property about a mile away, stating it is of a similiar size and specification (160m2). This is where I am confused. My property is less than 140m2, so I am at…
