Should I tell the tax man?
I am on PAYE and have never been required to complete a tax return for many years. The thought of having to complete one fills me with dread. Even getting a small additional pension recently they just amended my coding which is used on my main income, and I am now a higher rate tax payer. In the last year or so my savings…

Training Courses for Doctors - Any Tax relief?
Because both my wife and I are top rate tax payers but working for big employers every couple of years we get letters from HMRC telling us we do not need to complete a self-assessment because our lot are good at the PAYE. That seems to save a lot of hassle, so I've been glad of it. Recently though I've been wondering if…

child savings and tax - confused!!
Having read the advice on MSE, I am confused. I have read that children have the same tax allowance as adults (ie £6,475) so assuming our child does not save over this amount and we have completed the R85 form, she will not pay tax. However, further down the same page it states that they will have to pay tax on any…

Always check your tax code notices!
I can't believe how incompetent the tax people are! They've received my P11D and sent me a new tax code, and guess what? An error of over £600 that shouldn't be there! My employer pays for medical insurance, and what did the tax people do? Add a line with the 08/09 value, but still keep and deduct the 07/08 amount as well:…

IS there a rule whereby you can apply for all the income tax you paid within the present tax year if you are out of the country for a certain time period within that same tax year? Has anyone done this and how do you go about doing it? Many thanks in advance.

VAT reclaim - does the amount get taxed ?
I have created a spreadsheet for all my expenses and one thing doesn't make sence. If I pay VAT on goods and then claim it back then my overall profit is higher than if I buy goods without paying VAT on them in the first place. As I understand, this is because I added the reclaimed VAT to the profit but didn't apply income…
